Please stop using "Always Open With" or the Shell "File Types" dialog to
modify multimedia file associations in Windows XP. It does not work
properly/fully, and will simply cause further error and confusion.
At this point:
* Go to the Set Program Access and Defaults control panel and set WMP as
Default again
This will run WMP's fuller association tool, which is superior than anything
the XP shell has. (Vista fixes this.)
OK, at this point, where are you double-clicking files from when they open
in the wrong player?
Do you know how to use regedit at all?

See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.

Thanks for the tip about "Always Open With" and "File Types". I was
under the wrong impression that they worked fine. I'll use Set
Program Access and Defaults in the future
OK, went to Set Program Access and Defaults, Choose a Default Media
Player, Check WMP, OK. Then just to be sure I restarted XP. Opened
Windows Explorer, My Documents, My Music, and double-clicked an mp3.
Sure enough it opened with Total Recorder instead of WMP.
I can use regedit and have on a couple of occasions but I am not a
regedit power user. I know enough to backup registry before I do any
editing.
