Hi Neil,

I tried it again and ran the directx test and it shows no problem in
anything, i even checked under the properties of windows media player and
still no luck.

My computer was running fine all along until recently i tried to install a
software which i downloaded from some file sharing site and regretted it
cause after that i dont know what happened to my system. Like I said at
first i could not even open any folders and an error message would show up
saying "Data Execution Prevention is closing this folder to prevent any
viruses". I fixed this problem by using my antivirus which found some
trojan
virus in my com but after that i absolutely still cant seem to play any
video
files on any win amp, media player and real player.

If i cant get it fixed i will have to format my windows. PS I did
reinstall
my win amp and media payer a lot of times it still didnt work. I feel
something must have corrupted my file in the videos. I tried sending the
error messages to microsoft but they never give any solution so far even i
cant seem to contact them via mail as my computer is a self built pentiumn
4
processorwith a 512 ram.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

HI Neil,

Many thanks for your reply, but i did download the latest driver of my
display card and still no luck in either media files. Odd thing is i can
play
quicktime video with no prob and win amp, real player and media player
absolutley no video files. I can listen to audio files in all teh
application

Media player uses the video hardware in a different and more standard
(for windows) manner than Quicktime. Do you have video acceleration
switched on in Quicktime ? It may detect the machine can't do it well,
and turn it off by default.... check the Quicktime and Player options.

The best bet is to detail anything you know about the video files -
their source (where they came from), the file name / extension (eg
..wmv, .mpg, .mp4, .avi) and if you know anything about the size (width
x height) from File -> Properties in media player menus.

I dont know how theis problem came maybe a virus cause I could not even
open
any folders with any files which has the display icon in thumbnails and
it
would crash the folder saying Dr watson debugger cuased illegal
operation
which i have no idea what they are. After running the anti virus i
managed to
fix that problem but i cant seem to still play any video files as
mentioned
above.

I hope i am not confusing you. Cheers

Hi,

Recently the past few week i tried my best in trying to figure out
this
problem bu so far no luck. I cant seem to play any media video files
on
either windows media, win amp or real player. Beleive me I tried
reinstalling
all of the mentioned software but still no luck in playing any
videos. In
Media Player when i try to play any videos it says windows
encountered a
problem and needs to shut down. It only happens when i play any video
files.
Mp3s are fine no problem so far.

I am using windows xp home edition service pack 2 and would really
appreaciate if anyone can help me solve this problem.

If it affects all media players, the first thing I'd consider is
getting the most up to date video card drivers, from the website of
the video / display card manufacturer (not the monitor, the actual
hardware installed in the PC).

Typically if it was a Dell or Compaq, or similar machine, you'd have a
service tag number somewhere on the PC case. Using that on the PC
manufacturers website may either get you to the driver download page,
or provide details of the hardware installed in the box.

If updating the drivers doesn't help, post back.

One test you can do with the video card is to run DirectX diagnostics.

If you go to the Start menu, choose Run, type in

dxdiag.exe

and press Enter. Run through the video tests there and let us know of
any items which don't seem to be working right.

HTH
