What's the value under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wmv ?

No, I'm sorry, that still hasn't done it, the cmd did nothing, and in the
registry, it was already set like you suggested it be, I changed it
anyway,
but it still didn't restore the icon.

Actually, I just verified Set Program Access and Defaults should indeed
fix
this. Or just run:
unregmp2.exe /SetWMPAsDefault
from a cmd.exe prompt opened with administrative privileges.
Or set:
===
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMP11.AssocFile.WMV\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\Windows\\system32\\wmploc.dll,-736"
===

I'm on Vista, and it's the Windows Media Audio/Video file icons that
are
gone, so any wmv files just show as that default icon, they still open,
but
it's like the computer lost them

OK, are you on XP or Vista? What file types are you specifically

No, I'm afraid not, I already tried that and it didn't work, I
Googled
for
Codecs, X Codec Pack, Vista Codecs, etc, and I've managed to clear
all
of
the
rubbish now, but it took my filetype icons for WMV with it...

What junk had you installed? I've gotten a variety of bad third

to
fix themselves up, if you can let me know who is still out there
doing
badness, I'd really appreciate it.
You may be able to go to the Set Program Access and Defaults
control
panel,
reassociate to WMP there, and then have it work.

When I first got my computer, of course Windows Media Player came
with
no
Codecs, and I ended up downloading some really junky ones, which
I
finally
decided to take off a few days ago, they were slowing videos
down,
speeding
them up, etc. Anyway, I've removed them, and replaced them with
I
think
two
from wmplugins.com, my only problem is that WMV files that had
their
own
icon, are just showing that funny white icon with a screen inside
it,
the
one
that shows when a programme or file hasn't been associated with
another.
I
want to reinstall Windows Media Player, or repair it's
understanding
of
this
filetype, but I can't find a way to. Is there a way to reinstall
Windows
Media Player, and not download the older version online, a way to
trigger
it,
etc? Thanks guys.
