Actually, I just verified Set Program Access and Defaults should indeed fix
this. Or just run:
unregmp2.exe /SetWMPAsDefault
from a cmd.exe prompt opened with administrative privileges.

Or set:

I'm on Vista, and it's the Windows Media Audio/Video file icons that are
gone, so any wmv files just show as that default icon, they still open,

rubbish now, but it took my filetype icons for WMV with it...

You may be able to go to the Set Program Access and Defaults control
panel,
reassociate to WMP there, and then have it work.

When I first got my computer, of course Windows Media Player came
with

Codecs, and I ended up downloading some really junky ones, which I
