So if you don't see any error message, that would be pretty weird.
If you go to the Start menu, choose Run then in the box type
regsvr32 wmpasf.dll
Press <enter> then continue with the following commands :
regsvr32 dxmasf.dll
regsvr32 wmp.dll
regsvr32 wmpdxm.dll
I'm trying to get to a state where the handlers related to WMP and ASF
(WMV) playback are all in place.
It's not completely obvious to me that the files actually *are* WMV
files, so perhaps you could find one which doesn't display anything,
right click in windows explorer on the actual file, choose Properties
then check the filename really does end in .wmv and not (for example)
..mpg .mp4 or .mov
