I have an ISDN dialup Internet connection, with the associated limitations on
usage. Every time I open Windows Media Player on my PC to play a CD while I
work, it forces my ISDN modem to dialup, so it is evidently attempting to
access the Net. This is going to result in my ISP charging me for extra time
or dropping me altogether at some point. My modem is set to hang up after 12
mintues, but it will never hang up if the Windows Media Player is open.
I don't use any of the online features; I just use it locally to play
WAV files & CD's. How can I prevent Windows Media Player from ever attempting
Internet connection except when I tell it to update?
If it's acting like a normal dialup modem, try this :
Go to internet explorer, Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections
Make sure that's set to "Never dial a connection" for your ISP
account. Click Settings, Advanced. Make sure "Disconnect if connection
may not be needed" is ticked.
The player shares those settings with IE, and it shouldn't hold the
connection open since it only goes to the internet at startup and
every few hours (unless you're in the Urge / online stores view)
It's more likely that something else, such as a browser window is
keeping the connection up.
Another approach would be to install a software firewall such as Zone
Alarm's free version, and specifically block WMP from connecting to
the internet (put it in silent blocking mode so it doesn't bug you)

Of course, that also buys you very good firewalling capabilties for $0
