Media player has not played MOV files since about Quicktime 3 or 4.
So you'd still need Apple's free Quicktime player for that :
http://www.apple.com/au/quicktime/download/standalone.html
That's the standalone installer (without the iTunes bloat)
The default windows media player codecs list is on this support
article : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899113
To find out the codec you need for a particular (probably unusual AVI)
there are 2 tools listed here to identify the codec required :
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/codec.mspx#q14_5
Once identified, do a search on the codec name + "DirectShow" in
google to find a source for that. Codec packs are grenerally a bad
idea and can screw stuff up in unpredictable ways (plus they slow
media player and XP startup down)
The DivX codec covers most MPEG4 video, so it's always useful to have
installed : http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/codec/
