Making things bad sounds like a really stupid plan. That's not how things
work.
1) What crashes? Be specific:
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#bucket
2) See previous.
3) It probably never will be. That's not how Vista works. This isn't
something that I as a Windows Media architect could fix. It's a core Vista
architectural limitation. I've suggested it to the right people. Sorry. =(
4) It's never done that, if you're referring to "codec auto-download".
That's only supported for WMVs, really. What specific codecs for what file
type?
5) Get the Cumulative WMP Update for Vista and that should stop happening.
FWIW, you don't lose playlists, which are stored as data files anyways.
Because I'm
seeing a LOT of frustration here, very few issues solved.
THIS IS NOT PRODUCT SUPPORT. This is a peer discussion forum. If you want
to receive product support, use the product support channels:
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#psssupport
There's no obligation for anyone to fix anything here. If you get something
fixed by posting here, that's crazy lucky and somebody must have been really
cool to support a peer like that. Please please read here--
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#netiquette
You're confused in that this is not a supported support forum. I love
helping people, but good luck helping people on UseNet where you rarely have
any data to work with. =)
I love finding bugs. That lets me try to fix them for the future.
Anyways, post your crash information. Maybe that information could lead in
turn to something good.

That explains a lot, Omzig. So, since MS seems to have broken this
intentionally, to ensure we only use their product to look up music ripped
from original media by WMP, what other product does everything we need it
to
do, for MP3s we get from legitimate, but
"non-Microsoft-approved/supported"
sources?
WinAmp?
Yahoo Jukebox?
Rhapsody Player?
MediaMonkey?
Helium?
MusicMatch used to be my favorite until MS intentionally broke it with
Vista, and then Yahoo took it over and released a new Vista-compatible
version, but I don't think the new version has album lookup...or at least
I've been unable to find it.
My kid loves WinAmp, but doesn't have a large (70+ GB) library of music to
manage...and I don't think it does Album lookup, either.
What other products are you folks using out there, and is there anything
that "does it all" so we can drop this turkey? Let's enumerate the
problems
with WMP at my house...
1) WMP has bad glitches that cause it to lock up and crash on my computer
regularly, as well as routinely throwing random database errors that
mysteriously fix themselves when closing and opening the program
2) it's throwing an Event Log error every hour, regular as clockwork, and
sometimes THAT error crashes WMP, too
3) there's no way to re-install WMP 11 on Windows Vista, even though it's
been out for nearly a year
4) it now refuses to find Codecs it needs to play common media types that
other players play without issue
5) the "cure" for anything is to rebuild the database, because it
regularly
becomes corrupted, but in doing so, you lose all information about number
of
plays, playlists, date added to WMP DB, etc., etc., and only some of that
information is recoverable
6) "Plays for sure" has two versions incompatible with each other, so
"plays
for sure" doesn't mean it really plays for sure...
and now this.
I think it's time for MS to admit they don't know how to do media and get
out of the business, stick to OS for business support, plain and simple,
and
let Mac do what Mac has always done best...graphics and music. Because
I'm
seeing a LOT of frustration here, very few issues solved.

Hello Microsoft,
I use WMP11.
Windows XP SP2 - Fully patched.
Hope you are out there.
I have had the same problem for about 3 or 4 days now. I have tried 3 of
my
computers and 1 computer from my friends house on a new database and it
still
does not update any info in the media information.
I hope microsoft is reading this and would give us an update.
I have the same problem as all these guys on here.
Find Album Info works on new CD's to be ripped but if it was ripped with
something else, Find Album Info will not fill in the tag information.
There has to be somethign wrong with metaservices.microsoft.com
Thanks,
Omzig
