RE: i can't update my multimedia information

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

More things to consider:

It looks as if the FAI function is actually touching the database, just not
correctly. I've just noticed it's actually REMOVING the contents of the
Genre field, from whatever was listed (Jazz, Blues, whatever) and leaving it
blank, instead. This is repeatable on the same listing...if I fill it back
in, regardless of what I fill it with, it re-removes it. It doesn't touch or
correct the Album or Artist fields, nor the Sub-genre or Release Date
fields...just the Genre field, and it blanks it.

I've now re-removed all of the patches (it looks as if some of them
re-installed parts of themselves after I removed them, since there were
several Office items that showed installation dates of today...and I hadn't
re-installed any yet) with, predictably, no change in results.

Finally, I opened MusicMatch (which I don't do except in emergencies, since
it's got known incompatibilities with Vista, and blows up regularly) and did
their equivalent of the FAI...and it worked flawlessly. All of the Album
info filled in, album artwork attached appropriately, and when I subsequently
played those updated songs in WMP, they played without issue, showed the
album art, and all of the fields I checked (Album Name, Genre and Release
Date) were still there in WMP, exactly as supplied by MusicMatch (now owned
by Yahoo).

All of this seems to point to the actual WMP as the common problem. Hope
this helps...although I understand that if you can't duplicate it, you'll
have trouble continuing to troubleshoot. But trust me, there are a lot of us
out here with this issue...several people with multiple machines, with
multiple .mp3 database, all "corrupted" identically the same night.

Other things I've tried:
I listed *.windowsmedia.com as a Trusted Site in IE and further downgraded
security on the Trusted Sites zone.
I explicitly overwrote the permissions on the entire Media Player folder to
ensure WMPNetworkSvc had Modify permissions to everything...although it still
has Full Control on the CurrentDatabase_360.wmdb file.

My money is still on one of the patches as the culprit. Just because the
patches didn't uninstall cleanly doesn't rule them out as the source,
especially if the change evoked was not an intentional change but a
by-product...seen it before with MS and other products...Symantec, etc. All
of these folks all experiencing the same problem the same night makes them
very suspect. I'd be willing to believe it was the media services themselves
if you were having the issues, too...but since you're not, I have to ask:
did your system receive the most recent round of Security patches? Do you
have Vista and WMP 11 and Office 2007?

In case you're wondering, yes, I'm in IT, MCSE since '98, Manager of a large
IT Help Desk among other things, Masters in Computer Science,
blah-de-blah-de-blah, so if you have ideas, I'll gladly be your "arms" on a
system with provable problems, although I won't be home again until this
evening. ("I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go...")

Hope to hear from you...feel free to send e-mail direct:

Hi TRCIII,

Since you uninstalled the patches and they didn't resolve the problem,
then it's unlikely one of the patches causing the problem.

There's speculation from other users that perhaps the metadata service
isn't working right but I won't be able to ask the people who maintain that
service until tomorrow if they did any changes to the back end that serves up
content.

I'm also working on some other possibilities, but can't be certain at this
point what is the true issue.

I'll post back when I hear more.

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate, and Windows Media Player 11. I've been
all over the Net looking at this problem, and everyone agrees it began after
the round of patches which I installed on 11 Oct. Could be
coincidental...especially since nothing explicitly targets WMP, as you say.
I uninstalled all of the patches that had been installed on 11 Oct, but the
problem persisted...and something is still definitely preventing updates to
the database. I even explictly rewrote the permissions on the whole
subfolder and all files contained to allow Everyone modify/write in the files
and in the actual music media area, but no joy. The FIA goes out, "sees" the
information, states it is updating, but no changes occur.

Hope you can help.

Hi TRCIII,

If you are experiencing this problem then perhaps you can help me
understand. I actually reset my library, told WMP to look at a new location
and ripped some CDs, all without any problems. Find Album Info works
correctly and any changes I intentionally messed up, FAI fixed correctly.
Since I'm not experiencing the issue, then I cannot figure out how to fix it
on my own.

Given that it you indicated that it appears to be an update from Microsoft,
I look at my "updates" from Microsoft Update and I don't see anything that
patches Media Player in my list for a while now.

Could you please go to the Windows Update website, look at your update
history and tell me what patches you recieved in the past five days?

Maybe this will help us narrow down what's going on.

Also it would be helpful if you could provide Windows and Windows Media
Player version information along with the patches you received.
