Re: WMP 11 Downloading a streaming video

Wow, can you stil get Streambox ? I thought the project folded or went
commercial, then all the providers of streaming locked down their
boxen to make it hard to record using ?

I know the last time I tried a few years ago, NASA had done something
to their streams which made streambox repeatedly loop the request but
never start the stream / download.

Not necessarily deliberately but it is a protected stream

I actually called the source (Hawthorne Race Course) and they told me the
replays were free to view and that they had no objection to my recording
the
video. I also checked the properties for the video and it clearly states
there are no restrictions on the media. I wouldn't try to record it if I
thought it was wrong to do so. On the other hand, I really am not sure
what I
am doing so maybe there is no way to record it if I am using Media Player.

I guess the end result is that I still do not know if WMP 11 will record a
streaming video even if the video has no restriction.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.

Thanks for the help. The full URL is:
http://www.hawthorneracecourse.com/live_racing/instantreplays/071006-03.asx.

I will try to locate the browser's temp cache. That might work. Thanks
again.

Can of you tell me how to download and retain the video? I would

There are many ways for streaming video. You will be much more likely
to get help if you can give the url for the streaming video so someone
can check out exactly what they are using. In some cases the complete
video is stored in the temporary cache. I have been able to capture
many videos by going to the temporary cache just after the video
completes, finding the video(a very large file) and making a copy of
it to somewhere else so it does not get erased when the temporary
cache is cleared. This works very well for streaming .flv videos used
in new flash methods such as on YouTube etc. It also worked for
some .avi videos that Google videos used for longer videos at one
time, but not the protected ones that they sold.
For some other types of streaming, this method will work and for
others it will not. The temporary cache on the browser often is
difficult to find. I usually use the Opera browser for this. You have
to set the XP OS to show hidden files to find the temporary cache.
Then you have to go to Opera program files to find it. I put a
shortcut icon on my desktop to easily go directly to Opera's temporary
cache. You need to clear the cache on Opera just before you start the
streaming video so you do not have to search through so many files in
the temporary cache. When the video completes playing, do absolutely
nothing except going directly to the temporary cache at once.
Otherwise, the video may get erased.
