WMP 11 rips to both WAV and WMA lossless. A 3:20 minute file rips to about
23.8MB in WMA lossless format @1026kbps, compared with about 8MB for WMA
variable bitrate averaging 333kbps. The same file in MP3 format @ 320kbps is
7.6MB and in WAV lossless format hits 33.5MB @ 1411kbps.
WMP also allows selecting which tracks you want ripped and which not (manual
ripping).

I'm new to ripping music from CDs and burning CDs. I have WMA 11 on
Windows
XP and would simply like to copy music from some of my CDs and then burn
some
mix CDs from selected tracks. I just want to create an audio CD, with as
close to the same audio quality as the original CD, that I can play on
any
old CD player.
The info in WMA help seems pretty straightforward. I "rip" the CDs to my
computer, then I burn the tracks I want to a CD-R. But, I can't seem to
find
any information on which settings are best to use for my situation. When
ripping, which format should I use and why? I'm not concerned with file
size. My main concern is maintaining audio quality that is close to the
original CD and the ability to play the mix CD on any CD player.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
If you are just wanting to rip specified songs and burn them to a
mixed CD, I would suggest finding some software that will rip the
tracks you want to wav files instead of compressed files. Ripping to
most compressed formats will *always* create loss of quality.
The .wav files you get will be huge, but you can delete them after you
make your mix CD.
My program of choice is CDex (which is free). Probably not the easier
program to use, but it rips very well.
