Re: Can not roll back to media player 10 from 11

Have you ever tried starting WMP 11 in Safe Mode (with networking option
enabled)? Safe mode is a very minimal boot configuration and a lot of
processess won't be running. Also you could try using msconfig
[Start-Run-type "msconfig" and press Okay] set to Diagnostic start-up,
reboot and try starting WMP11 to see if you can get past the validation
process.

Seems strange to get a validation tool message when you tried to uninstall
WMP 11.
I think it would be very difficult to remove just the WMP 11 files manually.
I suspect that System file protection would simply replace the files you
delete with a copy of the same thing. When you uninstall WMP 11 normally
each file is replaced by its previous (WMP10 or 9) version and Windows
configurations altered to reflect that.

I missed to tell you that when I tried to remove media player 11 it was in
the "Add /remove program" list but I could not remove it by clicking
"remove". I used to get message that "windows validation tool will not
work
properly, if you still want to continue click ok" but the "ok" icon was
not
active. So I have to go to "C/windows/$unistall...$/spuninst/spunisn.exe"
to
remove it. After that WMP stopped appearing in the "Add/remove programs".

Now I have reinstalled WMP11, and again come back to where I started. It
asks for validation of my "windows" but the "cancel" and "validate" icons
are
not active. However on the same window the link to "Microsoft genuine
advantage privacy statement" is active as always and I can also close the
window by clicking the cross on the upper right hand corner but cannot
validate the window. Frustrating.... very frustrating.....

If none of WMP appear in "Add/remove programs" and there are some left
overs from WMP11, do you have any idea where I can remove these left overs
of
WMP11 to get rid of it completely and roll back to WMP 10.

"RalfG" wrote:

It sounds like you have quite a few files left from WMP11. I have all 3
of
those files in the same location but all of them reference WMP11.
"setup_wm"
and "wmsetsdk" both open the Windows validation box, which is active and
works.

My first thought was that the Windows Install Clean Up utility might
help,
but as I check mine WMP isn't listed in it at all. If Windows Media
Player
11 was not in the Add or Remove programs list after you originally
installed
it that is a sign that the installation never completed properly. Instead
of
trying to install WMP10, try installing WMP11 again.

I have noticed that if I click WMP in my programs list (from start
menue)
to
play WMP, the window that opens has the title WMP 11 that I did not
notice
before. It seems that WMP 11 is not unistalled completely and that is
why
it
asks for windows validation. I have also checked in the c/program
files/WMP
there exist three files with
WMP icon. If I click "setup_wm" and "wmplayer" the window that opens
has
WMP
11 as title but the file "wmsetsdk" which asks for accepting the
licence
agreement has WMP 10 as title. It would also be worth mentioning that
when
I
tried to roll back to WMP 10 it was not possible to do it from
"Add/remove
programs" I had to go to C/windows/$unistall...$/spuninst/spunisn.exe"
then I
could remove WMP 11. Is it possible there is something remaining from
WMP
11
that needs to be removed to revert back to WMP 10?

Media Player is part of Windows and the basic version never appears in
Add
or Remove Programs, so you can't uninstall it. All that can be done is
to
hide/unhide its icons using Add or remove Windows Components, which I
described earlier in the thread. The only time WMP appears in Add or
remove
programs is if you have an updated version installed. Uninstalling the
updated version automatically reverts you back to the previous version
of
WMP that was on the computer. Example, if your original version in
Windows
is WMP9 and you update to WMP10, then uninstalling WMP10 automatically
reverts to WMP9. It does not remove WMP. Similarly updating from WMP10
to
WMP11 and then uninstalling WMP11 reverts it back to WMP10. WMP always
remains on the computer in one form or another.

You ran the validation tool diagnostics so the tool is installed and
functional. Validating Windows and/or MS Office (IIRC) was part of the
diagnostic so I presume you did that. You try to run the WMP version
that
is
on the computer, get a validation box but cannot proceed, or you try
to
install an update, get a EULA acceptance box and cannot proceed. The
only
thing left that I can think of is that the scripts for these two
popups
are
being blocked by something on the computer, but the diagnostic should
have
identified that, at least for anything blocking the validation tool.
You
can
reduce the IE security settings to minimal, turn off any pop-up,
script,
worm blocking features in IE, your AV, anti-spyware and firewall
software.
Beyond that I'm out of ideas.

You were right these three updates were located at more than one
place.
Any
way before confirming that I installed them again. I have also run
the
validation tool but the problem is still there and the media player
does
not
even appear in "Add/remove programs list". What more I can do?

That's what I meant anyway. Try this webpage, it's an online
diagnostic
for
the validation tool:

Just to add that in my list of "Add/remove programs" Microsoft
validation
tool does not exist. However there is Windows genuine advantage
validataion
tool but it can not be removed from there because it has no
remove
option.

Before that try running Belarc Advisor to see if it can identify

It identified damaged or missing updates for me in the past and
I

able
to reinstall just the ones that were needed.

The MS validation tool can be uninstalled using Add or Remove
programs.
To
see the entry for it though you need to put a check mark in
"show
updates"
in Add or Remove programs. Reinstall it from Windows Updates.

SP2 can't be uninstalled as far as I know. Ordinarily it would
be
installed
from Windows updates as well but you can download a copy (it is
a
huge
266MB file!) from the site below. See what Belarc says before
you
try
downloading and installing this.

To reinstall SP2 do I need to unistall it first and how can I
proceed
to
reinstall SP2 and MS validation program. Where will I find
them?

"RalfG" wrote:

I accept that your Windows is genuine, however some of the
files
you
need
for the validation to work could be damaged or missing. WMP 9
is
part
of
Windows, it shouldn't need reinstalling. IE security
settings,
or
sometimes
AV or firewall software can block Windows updates but I don't
know
of
any
off-hand that block validation. You can try turning those
things
off
though
and see if it helps. Otherwise I suspect you may need to
reinstall
SP2
and
the MS validation program.

I have checked in the add/remove wiondows components WMP is
ticked
there
but
infront of it it shows 0.0MB. I tried to install WMP9 but I
got
the
message
that a WMP already exists so I could not install that. If I
go
to
"programs"
from "start menu" the WMP icon is there but if I click it I
get a
window
asking for validation of Windows but the "validate" icon
does
not
work.

I have also checked in the c/program files/WMP there exist
three
files
with
WMP icon. If I click "setup_wm" it asks me to validate
windows
which
does
not
work. second icon is "wmplayer" if I click it it also asks
the
same.
the
third is "wmsetsdk" if I click it it asks for accepting the
licence
agreement
where "accept" icon does not respond. Is there any way I
can
get
rid
of
this
validation problem. By the way my window is genuine.

"RalfG" wrote:

If WMP10 wasn't automatically restored after uninstalling

WMP
9
should be on the computer and (hopefully) functional. One
version
of
WMP
is
always there in XP, so does WMP run at all? Whether there
are
icons
displayed for it or not you can check in Add or Remove
programs
in
the
left
hand column under "Add/Remove Windows Components" to see
if
Media
player
is
set to enabled.

Yes I scroll down to the end of the agreement but there

to
select or tick. I have windows XP home edition.

I upgraded to media player 11. When I tried to play
it,
it
asked
me
to
validate my windows and when I clicked the "validate"
icon
it
is
not
active
or it does not respond. I tried to roll back to media
player
10
and
uninstalled "media player 11", "media fromat runtime
11"
and
also
Microsoft
User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0.0. Now
when
I
try
to
install
media player 10 again it asks me to accept the
agreement
but
when
I
try
to
click "accept" the option is not active. Can someone
help
me
to
get
rid
of
this problem and restore my media player 10? I will
be
grateful.
