I've been trying for the better part of two weeks to get this problem
solved on my new computer. I've made posts on other threads. Although I
still can't make the URGE store install in Windows Media Player 11, at
least the player now operates correctly, and I am able to download
normally to various MP3 and multi-media to-go players.
For the record, I have a new Sony VAIO desktop LS series running Vista
Home Premium and Windows Media Player 11, Media Center, iTunes software
for the occasional TV program download, Yahoo Jukebox for music
purchasing and Windows Live OneCare for security. I had and unloaded
Norton Internet Security software, Rhapsody and Real Player Jukebox. I
have TIVO software in my PC. I have a SigmaTel sound card. I have NEVER
had Samsung software for a mobile phone. All of the music is
legitimately acquired.
After receiving the new computer and restoring music from the backup
drive, I had problems. Basically, new downloads and old, new rips and
old, songs would randomly play or not play. Drove me crazy. Found I was
not alone. Did everything suggested, some suggestions seemed to work,
others not at all. These first steps are also found in other threads at
this site, because they seemed so promising. At first. For the record,
though, I include those steps in this thread and in the order I did
them. The LAST steps in this thread were the key, though. I did all of
these steps. Recommendation -- PRINT instructions so you can check them
off as you go. Follow along.
I did this:
Start, Control Panel, Hardware and Sound
Sound / Manage Audio Devices
Highlight your audio device
Properties
Advanced
In the Exclusive Media section, UNCHECK the box "Allow applications to
take exclusive control of this device."
Apply
Music would work for awhile, then revert to error messages.
And I did this:
From Windows Media Player, select ToolsOptions
Player
CHECK player settings "Connect to the Internet (overrides other
commands)
UNCHECK "Start the mini Player for file names that contain this
text:..."
Then with WMP closed, I went to this website
http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/...en/indivit.asp
and clicked UPGRADE. Then reboot. Music would work for awhile and then
revert to errors messages.
Finally, I did the following steps and this was the key:
Made sure all the updates were current and drivers up-to-date. Turned
off WMP, the TIVO server and the Sidebar.
This step allows you to SEE folders and files that are otherwise
hidden.
FIRST STEP:
? Start
? Type "Folder Options" in search bar, click "Folder Options" folder at
the top of the search results list to open.
? Click "View" tab
? Under "Hidden files and folders" CLICK Show hidden files and folders
? Two lines further, UNCLICK Hide protected operating system files
(Recommended)
? In Warning Window pop-up select Yes
? In Folder Options window, select Okay
Now I had the ability to view all files.
SECOND STEP
Found two icons of Notepad entries for "desktop configuration" on the
desktop. The first had this copy:
[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
The second INCLUDED this last line:
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183
I deleted the Notepad desktop configuration that did NOT have the
additional line of copy. I don't know what any of that stuff means, but
it didn't seem right to have both.
THIRD STEP, opened folder
? c:\programdata\microsoft\DRM
? Found an empty Server folder
? Kept that window open
? Opened a new window and went to
? c:\programdata\microsoft\windows\DRM
? Found a Cache folder and several gibberish (to me) files. COPIED the
Server folder from the first window into this DRM folder.
Closed both windows.
? Went to http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp
? Clicked "Upgrade"
FOURTH STEP
Opened Windows Media Player. Follow along:
Tools
Plug-Ins
Options
Highlighted Audio DSP
UNCHECKED Yahoo Music Jukebox; if there had been anything else, I would
have unchecked everything
Okay and stepped out of these windows.
Closed Windows Media Player
FIFTH STEP
Follow along to finalize:
? Start
? Type "Folder Options" in search bar, click "Folder Options" folder at
the top of the search results list to open.
? Click "View" tab
? Under "Hidden files and folders" UNCLICK Show hidden files and
folders
? Two lines further, CLICK Hide protected operating system files
(Recommended)
? In Folder Options window, select Okay
I no longer had or needed the ability to view hidden files.
Reboot the system. You know that feeling you get when you know the
storm has ended? The storm has ended. I've had several days and many
hours and several downloads with perfect operation. If you're living in
the same aggravating and music-less limbo I endured, I sincerely hope
