A lot of DVD rips to AVI do include AC3 soundtracks these days. As you said,
GSpot will indicate what CODECs were actually used in the file.
FFDSHOW filter will decode AC3 and several dozen other audio and video
CODECs.

GSpot is a program which can identify the code name ("4CC code") that
a video decoder is known by : http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
Download and install that, open the AVI fie in GSpot using the File ->
Open menu, click Render, then write down the audio (and video) codec
details shown in GSpot.
Post them back in this newsgroup and I'll try to find a decoder you
can use to play the AVI file back in media player.
