Re: Reset all WMP 11 settings

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I cobbled the following together too, which will help them register for
Vista's Set your Default Programs control panel assuming that they also
register themselves under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\mplayerc.exe .
It'll make their app that much more Vista-compatible.

Indeed. I have a custom reg file for myself that points to MPC location on
my
computer. It works like a charm. So I don't have to use the built-in
association anymore. (Thanks Vista for that)

I've instructed all people who got this reg file from me to run a
find/replace for the default MPC path and replace with their custom path,
and
not forget to use double backslashes (\\). It works. ;)

Minor follow-up:

MPC doesn't backup or restore the DropTarget and also doesn't restore the
registry value type for the Open verb. That's bad/not nice. Taking over
other people's progid is dangerous because it's kind of hard to be
future-proof / fully robust unless you've really gone through all the
shell
association documentation. I wouldn't do it.

The way MPC is currently associating isn't viable to an abstract reg file
solution for associations, since it uses a runtime-determined path in its
pathing. It'd be easy for their devs to add Vista Default Programs
support
when they get around to it, they just would need to point to their own
named
progid / handler which would contain their own registration. This should
be
very straight-forward for them.

The latest version. Both Gabest 6.4.9.0
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358
and Casimir's Mod (EVR compatible)
http://tibrium.neuf.fr/

Both of them associate the files the same way, I've checked. I have
already
talked to Casimir about the file association mechanism for Vista, but
I'm
not
sure he is going to implement it on his next version.

This is my reg file that associates MPC with Vista
http://andregb.apanela.com/mpcreg/MPC-all.reg

Please note, you should find/replace MPC's binary path to the path on
your
computer.
find: "C:\\Program Files\\MPC\\mplayerc.exe" (without quotes)
I have set it to use Windows Vista's default icons for associations.

Here are some screenshots
http://andregb.apanela.com/mpcreg/mpcreg1.png
http://andregb.apanela.com/mpcreg/mpcreg2.png

The Application Description was taken from MPC's official help file
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=144472

I believe I could simply fix the registry entries manually. Or someone
could
export .reg files for their WMP11.AssocFile.XXX and WMP11.AssocMIME.XXX
(though, I don't think the MIMEs were affected) to me. =)

Thank you

I agree, that's the most awful design possible. The program is Media
Player
Classic

Which exact version?

, a media player initially developed for Windows 2000 (but still under
heavy development). What amazes me most is that this destructive
association
design does work (I mean, filetypes do get associated with the
program)
and
most people (including the developers) don't seem to care about it.
And
when
something goes wrong they blame Microsoft.

Really? I've helped them fixed their associations in the past. I
guess
we
need to talk again. =P

Well, it is not just about ranting. I actually like this player and
it
offers me some options that WMP doesn't (such as the stupid 16-255
colormap
limitation =/). So I've developed a .reg file that creates a Windows
Vista
association for MPC (on Default Programs -> Set Your Default
Programs).
Problem solved, but I still have my WMP ProgIDs "corrupted".

Could you post that so I can verify it/copy it? I've created a number
of
those for my own testing - I don't recall if I made one for MPC, but
...
I
can check later.

Now, Zach, I'm not sure I understand your explanation.

The nut is I don't think I have an effective solution for you right
now -
I'd need to cobble that together. It shouldn't actually take too
long,
but
I'm going on a long bike ride this weekend, so ... give me a few days.

You said hiding and
unhiding would work only if no program had "corrupted" my keys, is
that
it?

Yeah, I don't think that'll work anymore because MPC has stomped on
keys
arbitrarily.
You could probably reset the WMP multimedia hive to restore these all
for
you, but that'd be more effort to tell you have to accomplish than to
simply
have me get you a registry dump.

If that is correct then this method won't work for me. Simply
deleting
all
these keys wouldn't force WMP to recreate them?

Absolutely not. Not without reinstalling Vista.

Can't I download WMP11 from
MS website and reinstall it? You know, it would be nice if Microsoft
simply
allowed us to install and uninstall embedded Windows applications.
=(

No, there is no stand-alone download available. The binaries in the
downloadable package are for XP and are not Vista compatible.

That's an interesting theory that implies/brings with it a vast amount
of
hideous issues that would swallow up man-years of time to straighten
out.
Let's not go there. Let's just focus on getting WMP working and
getting
MPC
patched to stop doing that badness.
