Yes, I have already found out about the .ivr file type. This is really
stupid in this day and age. RealPlayer is great software, but the company is
seemingly run by a pack of idiots. They are trying to become the great
failure that was AOL, and almost Apple, with proprietary stuff.
Well, look at where Apple's quicktime is now compared to where it
could've been if the interactive features Flash supplies had been
concentrated on. Quicktime is a great application nobbled by poor
forward thinking (despite many people on the QT lists telling apple
how they can really make it fly).
Realplayer has always had some lockin features, just as WMP does (DRM
in WMP, "buy player to write to DVD" etc in Realplayer) but it *is*
very feature rich even in the free player version.
The great thing about Real, is they can play all the file types, so I can
save all sorts of web streams as Favorites. If I want to get them into WMP, I
need to save them in Winamp ( which will save anything but Real) then parse
the URL out of the wrapper, copy and paste it into WMP11.
The codec and format update is one of my favourtite features of
realplayer. If you really want to play nearly anything, VideoLAN (VLC)
is probably still your best bet, and it works on all platforms. Ugly
as hell, but a great little player and streamer / recorder.
A lot of this is becoming moot, because WMP11 in Vista is a dream machine,
for ripping (replaces MusicMatch10), syncing (WMP10 would choke on a big
list, MM10 would handle it fine). I burn with Roxio, so, not involved with
WMP.
It's not so great for syncing IMO. There are too many variables and
device implementations which it stalls on to be truly great.
I just think that I watched WMP, Real, and MusicMatch mature to the version
10 stage together, each benefiting from the competition. Now, WMP and Winamp
need to stay on top of the technology race for our eyes and ears.
I have to admit, I lost track of Winamp quite some time ago when I had
an older PC (486/100 about 5 years ago) - its resource requirements
brought the machine to its knees, and I went with stuff that didn't
hog the system as much. I never quite made it back to evaluate it in
daily use. Yeah it's been a good discussion so far.
Cheers - Neil
