Re: Digital Rights Management

Hi Zachd
OK The tracks I downloaded from Oxfam, when I try to burn them to CD, a pop
up apears in WMP that reads:-
'A windows media player Digital Rights Management component encountered a
problem. If you are trying to use a file that you obtained from an online
store, try going to the online store and getting the appropriate usage
rights.'
There is a web help option and this takes me to a page called Windows Media
Player error message help, which has a lot of blurb and two options
1. uninstall and reinstall WMP
2.Reset DRM
I did no.1- no difference
No 2 didn't seem to make any sense and couldn't find what it stated.

Virgin didgital when I try to pay for the tracks- displays a message-
'click here to visit the Windows individualisation page and click UPGRADE.
I went to the page but the UPGRADE button doesn't highlight so I couldn't
click on it.
.............
All the tracks permit CD Burns and Oxfam still haven't replied to me.
Thanks
Foggy

Exactly what error did you encounter when burning? What URL did Web Help
take you to for that error?
Did the tracks play correctly?
What were the Usage Rights found on these files when you checked their
properties?

I see from previous posts that this is fairly common problem and no-one has
come up with an answer. Still we live in hope.
I installed WMP 11 and purchased music from Oxfam Music Download, I
downloaded the music and then tried to burn to CD as is permitted by the
track licence. However they would not burn as there were DRM issues. I
e-mailed Oxfam and of course to date they haven't replied ( 2 weeks).
I re-installed WMP, still no luck.
I tried Virgin Digital Music downloads, I selected my tracks and tried to
pay for them, Virgin checked my system and a message popped up that there
are
DRM issues with your system. I spent a couple of days messing with
searching
files, folders and settings but couldn't solve it.
I asked for help at my local computer shop and they suggested I use
Limewire.
I tried with a track from Limewire ( one of the tracks I'd paid for with
Oxfam) and I successfully burnt it to CD. So I wasted £40 with Oxfam and
they
couldn't be bothered to reply.
I might as well join the crowd and get my music for free.

Read DRM on Wikipeadia..............
( Digital rights management (DRM) is an umbrella term that refers to
access
control technologies used by publishers and other copyright holders to
limit
usage of digital media or devices. DRM can also refer to restrictions
associated with specific instances of digital works or devices. The term
is
often confused with copy protection and technical protection measures,
which
refer to specific technologies that control or restrict the use and access
of
digital content on electronic devices. Such technologies act as components
of
a complete rights-management system design.

The use of digital rights management has been controversial. Advocates
argue
it is necessary for copyright holders to prevent unauthorized duplication
of
their work to ensure continued revenue streams.[1] The Free Software
Foundation suggests that the use of the word "rights" is misleading and
suggest that people instead use the term digital restrictions
management.[2]
Their position is essentially that copyright holders are attempting to
restrict use of copyrighted material in ways not included in the
statutory,
common law, or Constitutional grant of exclusive commercial use to them.
The
Electronic Frontier Foundation considers some DRM schemes to also be
anti-competitive practices, citing the iTunes Store as an example.[3]

I'd like to pay for my music but it is far too difficult to successfully
burn to CD
