When I try to play a file from a website (DRM protected) Windows Media Player
says I need to download a security upgrade to play this file. It prompts me
to download the file, and I press "upgrade" as it asks. But then nothing
happens. When I right click somewhere or other and click on "Find newest
Updates" it tells me that my WMP is completely up to date. But I still cannot
play the file!

This article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891664 has information on
how to delete the DRM folder in windows, which may be interfering with
the upgrade process.

Note that there's no facility to backup DRM licenses in media player
11, so you'll have to re-acquire all those licenses next time you play
the tracks. That may take you over the number of license refreshes for
some providers, which means you'll have to pay for *their* tracks
again to renew the license.

That's broadly why I never buy DRM content, I prefer the physical CD
so I can use it as I see fit.
