Re: Can not install player

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

I have IE6 and was using WMP10 when I deleted. I also have not problems with
flash playing on sites like dogpile search for video when the thumbnails are
in flash. Someone on another site suggested that perhaps I have scripts
disabled and that is preventing the download of WMP but I cannot find
anywhere to reenable scripts or to check if they are disabled. The problem
also occurs in outlook express with any attachment that is in video. Thank
you very much for your extensive answer and the time you spent but I still
have the problem. I did go through the instructions on the links you provided
- just in case. However, no change.

viewed the videos on MSNBC before without difficult. The video at Youtube or
Myspace Video runs fine. I tried versions 9 - 10 - 11 with the same results.
I deleted windows media player from my computer and attempted to reinstall -

I use XP with SP2 and have checked for updates in MS and in browser. Tried

Objective is to view MSNBC news video. Also unable to view video attachments
in outlook express.

Unfortunately this seem to be a fairly complex situation. Don't blame
me, blame the webmaster of CNBC. I went to CNBC to see what is going
on with videos. First they use some flash videos that require at least
flash 6 to be installed. There seem to be no problems with flash on
the several browsers I have. Second they have Microsoft videos. Here
there are big problems. I tried to view a Microsoft video on several
browsers. It only worked on IE6. On Firefox, Seamonkey, and Safari 3
for Windows, it did not work at all. However Opera gave some
interesting information. Opera did not work and brought up a message
that IE6 was required, that a WMP 10 was required, and at least flash
6 was required for videos on the site. There is absolutely no excuse
for this, and someone should send a whip mistress from San Francisco
to teach the MSNTV webmaster not to write junk code when it is quite
possible to make Microsoft videos work on most modern common
browsers :-). I viewed on XP with all updates and WMP 11. So before
you can have any hope of viewing the videos, you must have WMP 10 or
11 installed and use IE6(or perhaps IE7).

It is possible that the WMP programs are messed up if you have had WMP
11 installed and then uninstalled it. To go back to WMP10 you have to
go through a rather complicated procedue.

For uninstalling WMP 11 it is not enough to just uninstall it at add/
remove. There are two other programs that also must be uninstalled in
a certain sequence, the computer must be rebooted at least 2 times,
etc. To see the details, go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/readme.aspx#R...
. Note the sentences:"Windows Media Player is a feature of the
Windows operating system and cannot be removed entirely. However, in
Windows XP, you can roll back to the version of the Player that was
previously on your computer."

Also there are several issues with WMP 11. For a listing of these
issues and how to overcome them, when possible, see
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsAmedia/player/11/readme.aspx .

If you did not uninstall the 3 files mentioned in the Microsoft
instructions when going back from WMP 11 to WMP 10, that may be a
problem. If you are not now at WMP 11, if you still find the 2 helper
files for WMP 11 mentioned by Microsoft at add remove, it may help if
you follow the instructions for removing them. However I can not be
sure that this will cure your problem and allow you to download WMP
11, since fortunately I have never had to face this problem.
