Thanks, cwdjrxyz!
It appears when I'm using Mozilla Firefox - here's the link:http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=33171&LegitCheckError=1
Notice - "go.microsoft.com" (???) It does have its humorous side - after
counting down from 30 to five days before your computer is cast into The Pit
Of Doom, it goes back to 30 again. However, it's still a pain in the a**e (I
can't actually USE the media player).
I'm just running AVG free software at the moment. Any suggestions?
Cheers!!!
I traced the route of that url you give on McAfee several times. I am
in the central US. The route always includes a West coast city and NYC
on the East coast. The West coast city varied between Seatle, San
Francisco, and San Jose. The domain does appear to be registered to
Microsoft. However, you should not assume the site is genuine from
this. Some of the hackers are very good and can make a fake site
appear about the same as a genuine site. My worry is that they are
going to ask for a credit card. I advise you not to give any credit
card information. Does your computer work, other than for the WMP? The
site seems to be concerned with if you have genuine Microsoft
software, and I would be surprised if Microsoft would question this
only when you try to use the WMP. A Google search of the URL turned up
nothing. Hopefully someone else knows about this problem and can
answer you. If not, your best bet is likely to contact Microsoft. I do
not know the best way to do this for your problem. Perhaps someone
else will know if they do not know the answer to your problem.

Is anyone else having problkems with a THING which asks for money before
"validating" the media player? I can';t get RID of it!
HELP!!!!
It sounds as if you may have some kind of virus, of which there are
thousands which do various things, including attempts to rip you off.
You can be sure that this is not from Microsoft who makes the WMP. The
first thing is to make certain your virus protection software is up to
date, and then do a complete virus scan. If the program finds a bug,
it may help you get rid of it. If the virus scan program can not get
rid of the bug, record everything it says about the bug , especially
any name, and post back here. Someone here then may be able to help
you or tell you where you might get help. Be sure to also say what OS
you have on the computer(such as XP or Vista) and what browser you are
using(such as IE6, IE7, Firefox etc). Also mention the type of virus
protection you have(such as Norton, McAfee etc). After you get rid of
the bug, some changes in your security settings may help in the future.
