RE: Security upgrade for WMP not working

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Mike - hi. I am going to answer both posts here. As to the error message,
no number is given, and the link is simply www.support.microsoft.com, and did
not seem to lead to anything specific. As to the "jumpstart" fix, I when I
copy and paste to the "Run" dialog box, I simply get the message that it
cannot be found, and to make sure I typed it correctly. I tried it several
times, all to no avail. I'm still stumped - how about you? Thanks, Mike!

Kelly and Taux,

Let's try one other thing. Sometimes we have to jumpstart the system
because of the initial attempt not being successful. This doesn't always
work but it's worth trying.

First close WMP if it's running.

For WMP 11 on Windows XP, try running this case sensitive (that means do a
copy and paste) command:

Click Start -> Run, then paste in "%SystemRoot%\inf\unregmp2.exe
/PerformIndiv"
and then press enter.

Now try running WMP. If prompted when trying to play the content, to go to
the webpage for the component upgrade please do so.

Does your content work now?

Mike: Hi. Tried the fix you suggested, but it did not really change
anything. When I go to the drmlicense page to upgrade, all that happens now
is that the upgrade button is no longer grayed out, but when I click it, I
get the message: "an error occurred during upgrade". It then suggests I
check out support.microsoft.com, but I simply haven't found anything yet to
fix this problem. Any other suggestions? Thanks, Mike! Kelly

Hi Kelly,

It's likely that if you aren't getting the yellow security bar across the
top of the IE page that you have ActiveX controls blocked. If you do get the
yellow security bar, you need to allow the control to install, otherwise it
won't work.

If you're not getting the yellow security bar, I've got some instructions
here I'd like you to try to see if it resolves your issue:

In IE select “Tools -> Options”.
Click the Security tab then select the Internet zone.
Now either click the “Default Level” button and click OK
or
Click the Custom Level button. In the settings dialog that appears, scroll
down to the ActiveX controls and plugins section.
Find the following and ensure the indicated setting is selected:
- Download signed ActiveX Controls – “Prompt (recommended)”
- Download unsigned ActiveX Controls – “Disable (recommended)”
- Run ActiveX controls and plugins - Enable

"OK" back out of the settings dialogs.

Now try to update your DRM again, did this resolve the issue?

I just tried playing both some new songs I had just downloaded, and when
those wouldn't play, some older ones that have been on my computer awhile,
but each time I try to open the songs, I get the following: "...cannot play
the file because a security upgrade is required. Do you want to download the
upgrade?". I click "upgrade", but absolutely nothing happens. (It has been
a month or so since I last tried to play one of the older songs, but all was
fine then.) I have tried loading all the Windows/Microsoft upgrades I can
find, upgrading IE to latest version, upgrading WMP to v. 11.0.5721.5145, but
nothing helps. I have even gone to www.drmlicense.one.microsoft.com for the
security upgrade, but on that page, the "upgrade" button is grayed out. I
have seen suggestions that say that I should ensure that "individualization"
is "on", but no info on how to do this. I am at my wit's end - help, please.
Thanks! (P.S. I run Windows XP.)
