Cause media player was a specific cost-option, right ?
I got mine free with the OS, I suppose you were burned there.
Neil, Neil, Neil. *shaking my head*... You know that Media Player is not
free. It is not even an option. It is a bundled package for which you have
no option except to pay for.
So you would prefer to purchase XP or Vista say without Notepad or
Calculator or Hearts as $0.15 options each, because you may not use
them (or know you'd use em till you got em?)
I don't see Apple shipping OSX without iTunes, iDVD, garage band or
even Quicktime - but nobody's complaining about that because Mac users
have expectations of a minimally functioning system which achieves
basic tasks like these without having to pay for the components extra.
Or how about they leave out networking components cause hey (like
Apple did recently for 802.11n) we want you to pay for some of what
most people consider reasonably provided basic OS functionality ?
Seehttp://tinyurl.com/2ltu2mand here if you need convincinghttp://eurotechnews.blogspot.com/2007/01/apple-users-to-pay-199-for-8...
Imagine the fun of self-selecting components to enable you to play
back CDs (CD drive hardware access, ISOFS reader, CD audio decoder,
track identification scheme, album art downloader), each of which is a
fraction of a dollar.
400 checkboxes has a tendency to confuse the average joe.
Hell, even the 20 or so in WMP do that, so you can imagine the fun.
You can of course download a new WMP for free as many of us have done
several times. However you can only download it to a Windows XP OS or
higher starting with WMP 10, which cuts out users of many other OSs.
Also some regulators in Europe have been unhappy with Microsoft for
bundling their WMP with the Windows OS, and lawyers on both sides are
making some very nice fees over this spat. However there are other
players that will play most of the Microsoft audio and video formats
on Windows or other OSs. Most of these are free, although some sell a
premium version with added features. The main reason for the often
free player likely is that they hope you will buy some audio or video
downloads from them.
There is a big format war going on, and everyone wants part of the
profits from audio and video downloads. HBO has just announced that,
starting next year, their over 25 feeds on C-band satellite will all
be in HD and will use the mp4 format. These feeds are received by
cable companies and small dish companies who re-uplink for comsumer
small dishes. Some cable companies will have to either provide
customers with new boxes for the mp4 HD format, or they will have to
convert the HBO HD signals to whatever format they are now using for
distribution to customers. Presently many are distributing feeds on C-
band satellite using an encrypted mp2 format of Motorola.
But, even if you are using a Windows OS, there is no reason why you
even need to use the WMP at all, if you do not like it. Try the Real
player, Winamp, QT, etc.
One thing that confuses people is that many so-called players include
some non-player functions. For instance burning discs, light shows, or
making library files has nothing to do with actually playing files on
the computer or on the web. If you are serious about working with
media rather than just playing it, you likely will get specialized
ripper and burner programs, wave editors, video editors, etc. These
can add up in cost, partly because others may have to be paid for
usage rights, so If WMP or Real included much of this in a player
package, the cost could shoot up to even more than the cost of a
Windows OS. As one example, only a few video players such as top of
the line (and expensive) Cyberlink will play DVD-Audio discs on a
computer. The most basic program to assemble and burn to DVD-Audio
format costs about US$ 100 from Minnetonka. It is not difficult to
spend hundreds, even thousands, of dollars for a collection of
programs for working with audio and video.
