RE: Windows Media Will Not Play Audio CDs from CDROM

Mike,

Maybe I should not have posted this message on this thread as it was realized
that this was a system wide problem. However if you are willing to help that
would be great. Some additional information you might find useful in
assisting me with this problem follows.

Since I do not play or rip CD’s to my computer very often I am not sure what
software I might have installed since this problem first came to light. My
first guess was the copy protection software and Media player that came with
David Grey’s CD, “Life in Slow Motion”. I have already gone to Sony’s site
and used both of the links there for uninstalling this software.

There are also several commercial games that have also been installed before
this problem surfaced. However, given the popularity of these games, and the
lack of other people having this problem, it is highly unlikely that any one
of them could be the source of the problem. There have not been any files
downloaded from the internet used to install software onto my computer. Being
the only one using this computer there is not any doubt about this.

Based upon what I see it seems likely the problem is linked to programs
attempting to access the internet for the purpose of downloading music
database information associated with the CD being played.

With WMP 11 after having attempted to play a disc the correct number of
tracks is shown on the right side of the screen and the mouse pointer is
replaced with an hour glass. At this point the only thing that can be done
with WMP is to close it with Task Manager. Clicking on the close or any of
other menu buttons does not do anything.

Creative MediaSource 5 Organizer brings up the “There is another process
holding on to the CDROM device. Try again after the process has completed”,
message when a CD in one of the physical drives is selected. After the OK
button is pressed, with the exception of the CD information not being
retrieved from the internet, everything works except for the retrieve
information button. When this button is pressed, “There is another process …”
message comes up.

The possibility of this being a problem with my firewall as a problem has
already been eliminated. Scan disk and defrag have also been run in a effort
to solve this problem to no avail. In addition I have used Norton’s System
Works Tools to look for possible problems in my Windows registry.

If I am one of the only people reporting this problem, it is not expected
that much help could be given, and there would be no hard feelings. If you
have any other suggestions about what I might be able to do though, and I am
not a Windows expert by any means, they would be welcomed and greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

Rich
