RE: ATE & Direct Edit Failure

I don't know, I'm at a loss as to why you don't have the security tab.

At this point what I would do is copy the files to a FAT32 partition, delete
them from the NTFS partition, then once they've been deleted, copy them back
and see if you have editing ability again.

Copying the files to FAT32 should force the removal of security descriptors
so that when you copy them back, they should have all the permissions
associated with whatever permissions your account has.

My Computer: Properties states my file systems in NTFS.
Thanks again.

No security tab? That typically only happens on systems with FAT32 drives.
Can you check that? Open My Computer then right click the drive and select
Properties. The first tab (General) will tell you the file system.

Thanks, I'll test that, just as soon as you tell me where I'm going wrong as:

I have checked that my account does have administrator access (via Control
Panel:User Groups). But when I right click on the folder holding my music
files (or the music files themselves), as you suggested, I am not given a
Security Tab to select.

I have tried searching Microsoft Help for clues as to what I might be doing
wrong, but came up short.

Any ideas? Many thanks for your assistance.

Check to make sure that you have the correct security settings for the files.

In your account (administrator level) right click the folder containing the
content and select Properties.

Next click the Security tab. Do you see your account name in the list for
the folder? If so, select it and then click the Advanced button near the
bottom of the dialog.

In the new dialog select your account name and click the Edit button. Make
sure that "Full Control" is checked and click the OK button.

Now just below the Edit button are two checkboxes, make sure they're both
checked, then click the OK button. You may recieved a prompt, allow it to do
it's work, then close all the remaining dialogs when the update is completed.

Can you update the files now?

I have been happily updating music in WMP (XP SP2) using ATE or directly
editing particular columns. I recently added more disk space to my computer
and moved all my music to this separate hard disk.
My problem is that some songs (both MP3 and WMA) are now seemingly locked
for editing. I have unchecked the read only box many times -(although
everytime I uncheck the read only check box in the main folder housing all my
music, when I go back into properties it shows a color indicating that not
all files are read only?).
All the songs play OK, but have minimal info and all these songs show "0
kbps". The actual song properties are similarly locked.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
