RE: WMP no longer buffers on http link to an MP3 file

Hi Mike - thanks, have tried this but there are no entries other than the
default under .mp3 and .wma.

I did notice that there is no key "wmplayer.exe" under OpenWithList; but
there is one "ShowTime.exe" - I deleted this key but again makes no
difference.

Still unsure - did you say that for you the whole file downloads on first
click?

Hi Richard,

No guarantees but I did some registry hacking on a test system and found
this:

If you go into your registry and find these keys:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp3\OpenWithList
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wma\OpenWithList

Delete the OpenWithList nodes, then clear your IE cache and try clicking
your links.

These values don't exist on a clean install for the media types, and so it
gets shunted straight to whatever is in the root key values player.

Under the OpenWithList is another key "wmplayer.exe". None of these keys
have value entries that need to be concerned about.

Yes I did do that; also tried switching the allociations to winamp and back
again. So you're saying that for you the entire MP3 downloads? I've played
with WMP options & file associations & defaults but cannot get WMP to buffer
the download on first play; which it used to; and would start playing within
a few seconds. Nero changed something but don't know what.

The only thing I can figure is that it's a mime type issue. Both links you
provided did the download first then launched WMP to play on the first click.
The second click is playing from the IE Cache (as expected).

Have you tried going into WMP, in the Tools -> Options dialog, Filetypes and
making sure that everything you want owned by WMP is owned by WMP?

If you're on Vista it's a different path, you go into the Control Panel,
click the Programs group, then in the Default Programs grouping click "Set
your default programs". In the list that appears, select Windows Media
Player and then either "Set this program as default" or "Choose defaults for
this program" which will give you the same File Types listing as above.

Hi Mike

Now I'm utterly confused, rather than just completely.

It seems that once the file has been downloaded once, if you click the link
again, then it does play immediately; but it seems to be playing from cache
somehow. This still means that for a new MP3, the whole thing has to be
downloaded.

Previously, I am sure that you could see the buffer loading on WMP, and the
play pointer trailing behind. Here's another larger link, would appreciate
if you could let me know whether this allows buffered playback on first click.

Any ideas why?

Hi Richard,

This actually is very dependent upon what kind of server the file is coming
from. Files from strictly web servers do the file download then launch in
WMP, files from media servers do the progressive download in WMP while
playing.

The really sad part is that I cannot locate any guaranteed examples of both
to show you what I'm talking about.

Do you have concrete examples of something that did the progressive download
before and no longer does?

have a wierd and wonderful error since installing Nero 7 on my machine
(vista). I know that the installation of Nero caused the problem as the same
thing happened on another machine (XP). After the installation, clicking an
http:// weblink to an MP3 file causes the entire MP3 to download before WMP
plays. Before the installation, WMP would play immediately, buffering the
MP3. I've tried everything I can think of, setting all file & protocol
defaults back to WMP, have uninstalled Nero, tried playing with WMP options
etc., all to no avail. Can anyone assist? I would like the MP3 to play
immediately, rather than downloading every time.
