Removing the My Music folder from the auto scan is easily done. Bring up
Tools -> Options, click the Rip tab and change the Rip target folder from My
Music to something else.
Next switch to the Library tab in the Options dialog and click the Monitor
Folders... button. In the dialog, click the second radio button down, then
select the folders that were "automatically added" and click the Ignore
button.
All you should have left is the Rip folder. Once done, click OK. Media
Player will try to scan the Rip folder, which should be empty, and then it
won't scan your Creative Player software content until you reconfigure it to
do so.
Now that I know you're using Creative software to rip and manipulate your
MP3 files, I'm pretty sure I understand what's going on. I could be wrong,
so don't hold me to it, but it's promising.
Media Player is trying to update the metadata of your files based upon a
"fuzzy match" because Creative software doesn't put the album id that WMP
uses for metadata matching. This is a bit more time consuming, and can delay
WMP from exiting.
That said, what you also want to do is in the WMP Options dialog, on the
Library tab, uncheck all the boxes in the lower half that have to do with
updating metadata for files.
This will prevent WMP from changing any ripped content that is still not
updated on your system.
As for plug-ins in WMP, if you press Alt -T -> Plug-ins, it will show you
any that are loaded and may add to the exit delay.

Yes.
Usually in the scenario that you're seeing, WMPlayer.exe is remaining in
memory because it's got stuff that it needs to finish doing.
It's taking a bit over 10 seconds to exit. I have 2GB of ram so it's not a
swapfile issue. Cpu is a Core 2 Duo extreme (2.93ghz), and video card is a
ATI X1900XTX AGP video card, so the system is reasonably fast.
I never noticed this long exit time before WMP 11. I just downloaded and
re-installed WMP 11, and the long exit time still occurs what possible plug
ins could it have?
I also noticed that when first started after install, it starts scanning my
system for MP3 files, which is a nuiscance, since I use the creative player
for mp3 files. I haven't found a way to remove the "my music" directory for
WMP's auto-scan list. I don't think this is related.
