RE: Banning CD's or Songs

I think the miscategorization comes from WMP... but it's taken a long time to
get to this state. So, maybe in the "olden times", there were more errors.
I'll take a look at recategorization via the server (which I've not even
tried...I do all the rippin' on my main PC and move it down to the server at
night). I'll post back when I get back to it.
Thanks for all the assistance!

You could let me have them... <grin>.
Actually as for the miscategorization, was that from other software or from
WMP?
I'm asking because it's possible to force WMP to go through and re-get all
your metadata (not that what we have is perfect but it's pretty good and we
try very hard to fix it when we discover that something isn't right). The
only thing is that the actual song file metadata won't get updated with any
changes (yes, it's a bug) if the files are on an server and you're using a
client networked to the share to access the songs. You would have to use WMP
on the server system to update the files, making sure that the appropriate
"update the files" checkboxes are enabled.

Thanks for the good info. I'll try down-rating the CD's/songs that are just
not things I want to come up on random and see what happens. I'd hate to
have to go in and rate every CD in order to get that to work though.
The problem I'm finding with having so much music is the desire to
accurately categorize each and every artist/album. There is a LOT of music
that got miscategorized.... sometimes, I just want to listen to a specific
genre, and because of the miscategorization, that doesn't work so well for
me; but mostly, I just leave it on random and let Media Player suprise me.

PS...I actually own the CD for every song on my server. Anyone got any
clever ideas for storing that many discs?

Dougbert,
What about creating auto-playlists with specific genres? Or perhaps
specific words in the album titles ("greatest hits", "best of", etc)
You can also set it to NOT include specific genres or artists, and each time
you add content to your library, the auto-playlist will just self-update to
add or ignore the new content based upon your filters.
To create an autoplaylist, right click the Playlists root node in the
Library and select Auto Playlist. A wizard will appear where you can filter
to your heart's delight.

I'm using MediaPlayer 11 and I have a collection of almost 50,000 songs on my
server. I love music and especially love to hear it played randomly.
However, there are some albums and songs that I just don't want to hear
unless I specifically look for them. I just listened to Sheryl Crow, then 15
minutes of rain sounds, then Warrant...not a good mix! Short of physically
removing the songs or albums to another location, is there a way to "ban" a
CD or song from being picked up when I shuffle through the songs?
Also, I have not rated any of my songs or albums and cringe at the thought
of having to pull those up and rate each one (and, making it worse, I think I
would probably have to do the same thing across multiple PC's I listen to
music on in the house).
