Re: Problems with version 9 and Win2K

OK one thing to check with the Java thing (WMP doesn't use Java BTW)
is to make sure you're up to date with the latest version of JRE.

Sometimes java apps break beacuse they have a dependency on a newer
version of java runtime, so you could try getting the newest version
(6.1) from here http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Actualy Neil, I just clicked on an audio link and it worked perfectly. The
link was directly to an MP3 file, but the links that don't work seem to be
associated with Java applets and code. Perhaps I am posting to the wrong
forum, because this problem does seem to be related to Java apps rather than
WMP. That would also account for the problem I am having with the credit
card app.

Thanks very much for your time.

I think you're confusing lots of unrelated things here.

The media sidebar was a feature which went away in WMP9 I think,
certainly it's not been present for several years.

The java thing no idea how that is related, you'd want to speak to the
CC company about suppport for that.

If you go to Start -> Run and type in

mplayer2.exe

Does the player controls / style you're seeing look like that player
(black with grey 2D buttons) or does it look like WMP9 style
(blue-grey gradient where the volume slider and buttons are) ?

Thanks Neil, but that didn't work. All types of local files will play
normaly, but I cannot play SOME audio content on the Internet. What used
to
happen is that the media sidebar would open up in Internet Explorer, or a
new media player window would open whenever I clicked on an audio link.
Now, the sidebar doesn't even open up. I'm wondering if this is perhaps
an
IE pluggin issue, but I don't see anywhere in Internet Explorer to check
pluggins. Just as a side not, I also used to be able to generate
one-off
credit card numbers for on-line purchases, but I can't get the popup Java
application that was provided by my credit card company to work anymore
either.

I have version 9 of Windows Media Player installed on my computer
using
theWindows 2000 operating system. Just recently I noticed that I can
no
longer hear the audio in some multimedia content on the Internet,
specifically if I try to listen to samples of audio tracks I want to
try
before I buy. An example would be from the site buymusic.com. Also,
I
cannot hear the audio in some Internet video content even though I can
see
the video itself. All of my audio settings appear to be OK, and I can
hear
local audio files and video files using Media Player.

It's likely to be the same problem in both cases. Probably your
browser is bringing up the WMP6.4 control. The older player has
separate codecs from the ones used in WMP9 so you probably don't have
those decoders installed.

The bottom button on this page has the codec package you need :

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/format/codecdownload.

There is one other thing that I have noticed. I have a small voice
recorder
that I use for note taking and interviewing. I can transfer the audio
from
the recorder to my PC as WMA files and up until recently those files
would
play at normal speed. Now when I try to play the files they play back
at
twice the normal speed. Even though Media Player 9 has a speed control
in
XP, the speed control is not available in Win2K.

ZachD's site usually indicates sound card acceleration issues :

I'm sure that I have been able to hear Internet audio content since
upgrading to Media Player 9

It depends greatly on how the site "embeds" media player. If they do
it badly, you end up with media player 6.4 and the resulting problems.

In the case of buymusic, they *appear* to be using the explicit
WMP7-11 control in the page, however it's entirely broken in firefox
(sending me to a "hurl.exe" link like Amazon do, and sending a content
type of video/x-ms-asf rather than the expected audio/x-ms-wma)
