Re: Creating a library MP3 or WAV(lossless)???

Thanks cwdjrxyz. I understand now and appreciate you taking the time to
explain this to me.

So, On the windows media player 11 that I'm using the choices are:

WM Audio
WM Audio Pro
WM Audio (Variable bit rate)
MP3
WAV Lossless
The WAV lossless has the highest kbps with 1411.2. Is that the highest
quality? I didn't see PCM. Thanks for you response.

CD bit rate = 16 bits per sample x 44,100 samples per second x 2
stereo channels = 1.41 Mbps = 1411 Kbps. Thus your one and only rip
choice for a wav on WMP 11 which is 1411 Kbps is the CD standard, also
known as PCM. There also is a mono standard which will be just half
the bit rate of the CD standard. Since the WMP is so limited in the
file types and sample rates, etc it supports, I never use it for
ripping, file type conversion or burning. I usually use Easy CD-DA
extractor. This rips in 16 formats under various sample rates for
each, converts between any of about 16 formats, and burns normal PCM
CDs as well as mp3 and wma CDs. The program is not free - someone has
to pay usage fees for using programs of many of the formats and the
seller of a program hopes to make a little profit after paying these
fees and spending time to update the program from time to time. Likely
one reason that WMP is so limited in ripping and file conversion is
that Microsoft does not want to pay usage fees and have to deal with
all of the legal matters connected with this for formats other than
the most basic.

It never matter to me before, but now I need to re-create my library. I will
be making CD's to play on any player and Downloading MP3's to players and to
memory cards. For the best quality reproduction I assume I should rip all
cd's to MP3 at 320kps to my library. Then the files can be downloaded
directly to MP3 players and cards. When burning a cd, I need to adjust the
settings to convert the file to Wav. format. Am I on target? Thanks.

If you are interested in quality, always rip a CD as PCM which is a
stereo 16-bit, 44100 Hz standard wav. Pay strict attention to this, as
there are many types of wavs at lower bit rate and/or frequency that
give poorer results. This will give you an uncompressed stereo clone
of the CD audio, which you can burn to a new CD as a clone with no
compression or loss of quality. The only advantage of burning a CD in
in other format is a saving of space. This no longer is an issue with
blank CDs now costing under US$ 30, often much under, in lots of 100.
Burning in .mp3, .wma, or any other compressed format lowers the
quality. If you need to transfer to a compressed format for some
device other than a CD player, convert to mp3 or whatever as you need
it. If you start with a compressed source other than a standard CD
recorded as uncompressed PCM , ripping it can never give as good
results. Also, every time you convert from one format to another, you
lose a little to much quality, depending on the degree of compression
etc. The only things better than a standard CD are SACD and DVD-Audio.
These types of commercial discs usually are much more highly encrypted
than even a standard DVD move, and thus usually can not be ripped. The
only advantages I see for compressed music formats these days are: (1)
for web pages, if you want to support dialup users, or if your
bandwidth bill becomes excessive. (2) for small portable devices where
use of a standard CD would increase size too much, and digital memory
for uncompressed formats would make the device too expensive.
