RE: sharing files from my removable HD to xbox360

Hello,
I am hoping I can continue on this thread, because I am having the same
problem. I cannot stream media to my xbox 360 from an external hard drive.
My HD is a usb connection with FAT32 partition. I am running XP
professional. I can view videos from the My Videos folder as well as other
folders randomly selected from my internal hard drive, but not my external
drive. The drive has been added to the monitor list. I checked what sherm
did to fix the problem, and I also originally had WMC on my computer and
upgraded to WMP 11, but WMC was no longer in my add/remove programs, so I
must have removed it at some point. I also played with different file
settings for read-only and archive and couldn't get anything to work.
Here is the kicker... The other day after I first got the new xbox update on
my 360, I added the external drive to the monitor list on my computer and
could see and play all of my files from the 360. After playing around with
it a little bit, I removed the hard drive from the monitor list so I could
turn it off, (kept say drive was being accessed so I could not disconnect
it). Today, I re-added the drive to the monitor list and cannot get the
folders to show up on my 360. Since I orginally had it working, I have done
a system restore to a checkpoint from a few weeks ago (I had messed up some
system codecs).
Any help or clarification would be HUGELY appreciated.
Thanks,

i have xp home and it seems like you had it set up the same.I did have WMC on.
here before i downloaded WM11 . you reminded me when you asked that, that in
my add/remove programs it still showed WMC running so i went in and removed
and also i saw in my music folder's properties that the attributes was as
read only so i archived it as well(im not sure why i did just a hunch). after
i just deicided to check my xbox and its reading the folder now. im not sure
which i did that got it working if not both but it looks all good from here.
I really appreciate you guy's time, patience and effort helping me to get
the problem solved.
thanks again.

Hi Sherm,
Sorry for the slow response. I've been trying to get your same setup going
over here to see if I run into the same issue. Here's what I did:
Clean installed Windows XP Home
Installed WMP 11
Connected a USB harddrive (formated FAT32) with content to the machine
Added my entire USB drive (G:) to the monitored folders list.
Shared out my library to my xbox
However, everything worked for me, so I'm not quite sure if I have exactly
the same setup as you. Is there anything that I have setup that's different
from what you have? What version of Windows are you running? (XP Pro, XP
Home, Vista?) Did you originally have WMC installed and sharing, and then
upgraded to WMP11?
Thanks.

Mike&Chung,
it's fine. im in no rush. i appreciate all your help.
here's what i got.
its a FAT32 file system. and has no security tab. and to answer Chungs
question's, its a WD My Book 160gig. a FAT32 and honestly im not familiar
with the command prompt. i managed to get to the music folder in the prompt
but i wasnt sure how to type a mp3 file out the right way to access the info.

Sherm, there could be a few possible issues going on. Can you answer the
following questions?
1) Is this a USB flash drive or a USB hard drive?
2) Is your drive formatted in FAT32 or NTFS?
3) Are file permissions setup correctly?
In order to verify file permissions, do the following:
1) Open up a CMD window
2) Change the directory to your USB drive
3) Find one of your content files (.wmv, .mp3, etc...) and run the following
command on it:
cacls <your file>
If your drive/folder is configured correctly, it should have an entry like
this:
NT SERVICE\WMPNetworkSvc:(ID)(special access:)
READ_CONTROL
SYNCHRONIZE
FILE_GENERIC_READ
FILE_READ_DATA
FILE_READ_EA
FILE_READ_ATTRIBUTES

Mike,
i had saw that when i was looking at the options so i rated everything a 5.
it still didnt work.

Hi again Sherm,
One other thing, I'm told that if the ratings for the content is not 2
stars or greater, then the content also won't be shared.
So please check the Monitored Folders... and the ratings on this content.

Hi Sherm,
I'll let the developer who owns Media Sharing know about the problem you're
having and see what results from it.

hey mike
thanks for the reply
see i did that. now when i click on library then folders, three come up. my
music, shared which are both on c\ then the third is my music folder form the
removable drive. i know WMP see's it but my xbox is only reading the music
from the 1st two folders. it's making me think im not doing something right
but it dosent give me alot of options on the media share. i use to have just
windows media connect and never had any problems with that.

Hi Sherm,
While WMP 11 is running, if you click the F3 button, you'll bring up a
search dialog. There's an advanced options portion that allows you to add
other locations on your computer to the Media Library.
Once you've added the content of that removable drive, you should be able to
let your XBOX 360 access the content via the Media Sharing option in WMP 11.

so i have WMP11 and from what im finding the only way i can share my files is
through the my media and shared folder. thing is all my music is on a USB
removable drive. Is there a way i can get it to share those too without
having to make a second set of the songs into the shared folder? there's no
reason for me to have all my songs on both drives so i dont want to have to
go that route. any help will be greatly appreciated.
