Yeah, you just have newer files than what that installs. That's what I
thought it would say.
There's two ways to get this to work - I'll start with the 'better' one--
Run the WMP10 setup package and keep the block onscreen. Then go to the
%temp% directory and look for "setup_wm.exe" . That should be version 10.
Copy that file to the desktop. Say OK to the block dialog. Now - can you
copy this file to your c:\program files\windows media player directory?
That should theoretically get you running the right version of setup_wm.exe
..

I get an error message that says: This version of Windows Media
Technologies
is incompatible with this version of Windows. For more information, view
the
information at the Microsoft web site.
II am on XP Pro, which should be the correct version to run WMP 10, right?

setup_wm.exe is version 11.0.5721.5146
wmplayer.exe brings up the validate windows screen.

How are you trying to run WMP right now? You're evidently still
running
the
installer in some fashion. What happens if you run wmplayer.exe
directly?
What file version is c:\program files\windows media
player\setup_wm.exe ?

That's not the question it asks me. Is says it has to validate my
version
of
windows, so the options are validate or cancel. When I cancel it
closes.
When
I validate it, it installs 11 again. It never asks if I want to
upgrade.

LB,
You're not doing anything wrong, answer No to the question that
asks
you
if
you want to upgrade.
You should still have WMP 10 installed. The question you're being
asked
is
the "check for new version" sequence. You don't have to take the
new
version.

I followed the directions... uninstalled 11, restarted,

What am I doing wrong?
I'm on regular XP.
