Thanks much, Zach. Since I got the file resent it works fine. Thanks for
your help.

I was curious about what does work and what does not. That should have been
"when", not "what". =)
During playback you can usually check File:Properties to see what codecs are
being used.

I'm running XP. I don't understand your first question, "what *does* it
fail". At first it played both the video and audio when I played the .wmv
attachment, then, it would only show the video. The next time, I only got
the video and could not get the audio at all. Nor in subsequent attempts.
I
asked the sender to resend which he did, and it works fine, now.
"Does it play back locally?" Man, I'm at a loss as to what you mean by
that
question, too. Sorry. I always use WMV on my 'local' computer.
And, I don't know how to tell what specific codec the file uses.
As I said above, the file was resent to me and works just fine, now.
Perhaps it's a non-issue at this point but now I wonder about the
stability
and future functioning of WMV.
Thanks for your help, though.

Is this XP or Vista?
What specific audio codec does the file use?

I've got WMV11. The audio works some times and not others. No problem
with
the video. The Wave is up all the way and not muted. I'm trying to
play
a
.wmv file that came as an attachment to email and get no audio but when
I
try
other files it works fine.
Thanks for suggestions!
