Found the problem. AOL IM installed Viewpoint Media Player and creating
havoc. Won't do that again.

Just tried 2 different local administrator accounts, including Administrator..
Both exhibited the same behavior. The file I am really trying to play is a
.wav file that our VOIP phone system sends as an attachment when voicemails
are left. However, I am also trying to play .mp3 files that are not
protected. All file types are doing the same thing - access denied.
Whats really a bummer is that this is the 2nd Vista install where this
occured. I was so frustrated on the orginal system that I rebuilt the whole
thing. The only recent software I installed was Visual Studio 2005, plus SP1
and the Vista SP.

Interesting. Any time I've had "Access Denied" errors in the past this has
always resolved them. Can you play the content with any other accounts on
the system?
Are the files protected? If they are, perhaps somehow the DRM store somehow
got protected.

That didnt work. The local admin group was setup this way already but I went
ahead and added my user account explicity and applied full controls. Same
error.

Jeff,
You're correct in thinking that you cannot reinstall WMP on Vista, however,
access denied doesn't mean you cannot see the file, it means you cannot use
the file.
Somehow it seems that file permissions for your music are not correct for
your user profile.
This sequence pertains to files on your local system only:
Navigate to the folder above the one where all the music is stored, right
click it and bring up the properties dialog. Next click the security tab and
click the "Advanced" button. In the new dialog that comes up, select your
logged on user account in the Permission Entries box, and click the Edit
button. Check the top box (Full Control) and then check the box at the
bottom (Apply these permissions to objects...), then click the OK button.
This will apply full permissions to all the files. After that, you should
be able to play all the content.

I have a new install of Vista Business. WMP was working but something has
occured that broke it. Now when I click on a MP3 or WAV file, etc i get an
error:
"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you
might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy
settings might not be correct." Error code is 80070005 - General access
denied error
I have checked the obvious. The file is on my desktop, not a remote
connection. I do use a proxy and yes its set (not sure what a proxy would
have to do with it). I am a local admin...and even a domain admin.
I can't roll back to a restored state as I don't know when this started
happening.
I would love to reinstall WMP but unfortunately I don't think its possible
in Vista.
Any suggestions?
