I also have the same problem of no sound from AVI files with Vista and Media
Player 11. I originally noticed the problem with AVI's downloaded from my
Samsung Digimax S500, but there is also no sound from the well known XP file
C:\Windows\Clock.AVI. Here are my comments previously posted elsewhere;
AVI files created with my Samsung Digimax S500 play perfectly on my Windows
XP systems. These same files do not product sound on my Windows Vista Dell
Insiron 9400. The AVI files play the video but with no sound on Windows Media
Player 11 and with Windows Movie Maker. Windows Media Center does not play
the video and has the following error message "Cannot Play Video - One or
more codeds required to open this content could not be found.". When the
video is playing with Windows Media Player 11, I can display the properties
of the video which shows only a dash (-) for the Audio codec and the Video
codec on both the XP and Vista systems.
The audio and video codecs for the Vista system are at the bottom of this
message.
The XP system shows different codecs.
I understand from the Microsoft documentation that I should download missing
codecs from http://www.wmplugins.com
However, it is unclear which codecs are appropriate and which ones
correspond to the ones on XP that are missing from Vista.
I started to download one of the Microsoft codecs and it listed Windows 98,
ME, and 2000 which looks dated and probably not relevant to my problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

From my Vista computer, I ran the C:\WINDOWS\CLOCK.AVI from the XP computerand it displays the video but does not produce sound. The media player
properties shows both audio and video codecs to be blank. WMV and MPG files
produce sound correctly and both audio and video codecs are identified. I
took the AVI file and on the XP computer, I converted it into a WMV file.
Although this AVI file produces no sound on the Vista computer, the converted
WMV file played correctly on both the XP and Vista computers. The converted
WMV file is about 66% the size of the original AVI file leading me to think
that maybe the original is not compressed and because no codec is identified,
maybe no codec is used. Is that possible? Do all AVI files use a codec? I
would like to know if any Vista computer can produce sound with the well
known XP file C:\WINDOWS\CLOCK.AVI
