I ripped a bunch of CDs in iTunes but since I now am buying an mp3player (not

It is possible to get WMP to recognise and play both AAC and Apple Lossless
formats (both use the .m4a extension, file format and tag format). However
it is likely that your non iPod MP3 player will have difficulties with AAC
and completely refuse to deal with Apple Lossless.
If you are using AAC and determine your non iPod device cannot play AAC or
you are using Apple Lossless then you will need to convert the tracks to
MP3. Fortunately this is very easy in iTunes.
1. Go to preferences, and then the Advanced tab
2. Go to the Importing options
3. Set it to import in MP3 format instead of the default AAC
4. Close the preferences window
5. Select all the tracks you want to convert in your library in the iTunes
window
6. Go to the Advanced menu and select the Convert to MP3 option
7. In view of the quantity you have, leave it running over night and make
sure you have enough disk space for both AAC and MP3 copies of each track
8. When it has finished sort all the library by "Kind" (i.e. AAC grouped
together and MP3 grouped together).
9. Select all the AAC tracks
10. Delete all the AAC tracks
This will leave you with just MP3 versions which you can then easily add to
WMP.
Or instead of doing all of the above...
Just get an iPod like everyone else :-)
