As far as I have been able to determine from my testing, this limitation does not effect searching; it only effects the displayed track list in the Library view. Even in the songs view, if you scroll to the bottom it will load the rest of your songs - I think. Maybe it only loads the next 5000. On my Vista/WMP 11 PC right now, I have just short of 10,000 tracks so I can't say what happens there exactly unless I copy the rest of my tracks over. But since you have 20,000 you should be able to test this easily:
1. Close WMP if it is open and then open WMP 11.
2. Click into the Songs list.
3. Click a single song in the list. Now press CTRL-A.
4. You should see WMP improperly tell you that you have 5000 songs.
5. Scroll to the bottom of the songs list by dragging the scroll handle, don't use the scroll wheel because I can't predict how that would behave in this regard. When you get to the bottom of the scroll bar, release the scroll handle.
6. The scroll handle will jump back up as Windows Media Player loads more (or the rest) of your library.
7. Click CTRL-A again. How many tracks does it say this time? 10000? Or the total number in your library?
Let us know. I'm curious how this turns out.
Either way, this shows a serious limitation caused from the decision by the Windows Media Player product team to - seemingly arbitrarily - remove the tally that previous versions of WMP had, showing the total tracks, total time, and total file size at the bottom of the library list. Now, not only do you have to do the select all function to see the tally but you have to first scroll through the entire list in order to make the CTRL-A trick work. While being a seemingly minor annoyance, it is also a constant annoyance and therefore becomes a significant frustration to the customers of the Windows Media Player product team.

Dale -
Did I hear you say that WMP11, on opening, only loads the first 5000 songs of the library?
My library is about 20,000 songs - and I want to be able to search the whole lot ! Is this going to be a problem ?

"Dale" <nospam@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:%23GJGLTUbHHA.4176@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxThat works for Windows Media Player 10. Unfortunately, the Windows Media Player product team thought it was important to remove that feature from Windows Media Player 11 and, in fact, doesn't even load your entire library but stops at 5000 items when you first open the player.
To see the count of items in your library with Windows Media Player 11, click on Songs at the left then click on any single song in the list of songs. If your library consists of more than 5000 songs, scroll down to the bottom of the list until WMP loads the rest of your library. If your Songs list is sorted by song title, make sure you get all the way to the Z's. Otherwise, when you perform the following steps, you'll be told that your library only has 5000 items.
Now, on the keyboard, press CTRL-A to select all of the tracks in the list. Then look quickly down to the right of the media controls at the bottom of the window. The total number of selected tracks will be shown and an approximation of the total length of those tracks will be shown (the seconds are always truncated off and the minutes are truncated off if the total is beyond some number of hours). Just be sure to look quickly because the total number and approximated time will only be shown for a few seconds. If you snooze, you'll lose it.
And if you want to know the total size of the library on your hard drive, which was also shown in WMP 10 and, for some unknown reason removed from Windows Media Player 11 by the Windows Media Player product team, you will have to get your 10-Key adding machine out with a couple spare rolls of paper and start browsing your hard drive manually adding file and folder total sizes. Bring lots of coffee to this task. It could be a while.

toward the bottom left of the window, it should tell you how many
items (songs) are in the list.
