When I play video from sites such as CNN.com, the playback speed is
too fast (chipmunk sound). If the cached .DAT file from the Temporary
Internet Files folder is opened directly from WMP, the playback speed
is normal. Is this a plugin problem?
I am running XPSP2, WMP9 and IE6. I experienced the problem after
upgrading to IE7 and WMP10, so rolled back to my original
configuration. I have re-installed WMP codecs, re-installed WMP9, re-
registered wmp.dll and wmpdxm.dll. but nothing has helped. I have
tried several other common speed problem fixes (turning off
acceleration, re-installing sound card driver, etc.)
Web-based videos that open a standalone Windows Media Player (such as
YouTube-like sites) seem to work fine. Anytime a player opens as part
of an IE window, the playback is too fast.
Here is an example of a site where the video plays too fast in my
browser:http://www.tn.com.ar/video.asp?Id_Nota=51987
but the live video link on this page plays at normal speed. What's
different between live video and the .wmv server files? Codecs for
playback?
The speed problem occurs for all video on CNN.com.
Thanks for any troubleshooting suggestions you can offer.
The example of the video that plays too fast for you works just fine
for me at correct speed. I have XP with all updates and the WMP11. I
also do not recall such a problem when on WMP10 and earlier on WMP9. I
viewed the page on Firefox, Opera, and IE6. I have an actual download
rate of a bit over 5 Mbps unless the viewed page's server is
overloaded or there is congestion on the net. I don't know what your
problem is, but I doubt if it is the code used. Since you have
upgraded and rolled back both IE and WMP, the problem may be very
difficult to find.- Hide quoted text -

I don't suspect a network or website problem as I did not have any
problem viewing videos prior to the upgrades.
During the same timeframe, I installed a couple of other media players
(WinAmp and MediaMonkey) and Xvid so it's possible that something else
I'm not considering has caused the problem.
I have had WinAmp a long time and kept it updated. It has never caused
problems. I have never used MediaMonkey or Xvid. I also have Real, QT,
AVS, I Tunes, and Cyberlink PowerDVD, and they have never caused
problems through several updates. Conflict for video authoring and
burning programs can happen. There have been some conflicts between
Roxio and Nero in the past, for example.
