I saw the AC3filter thing too - is it possible that the users had previously
installed a codec pack with a bad version of the AC3filter, and so this is
just kind of fixing them through fixing that broken software? That's my
likely suspect right now barring any associated causality.

zachd - thanks for the reply and the useful link
What sound cards are involved?
What system types (MCE or regular XP)?
Are these systems upgraded from WMP9 or from WMP10?
Both XP and Windows Media Center XP computers seem to have the no mono
sound
issue.
I don't know for sure, but I think almost everyone must have had WMP 10 or
earlier installed and before the WMP 11 installation could hear mono
sound.
Uninstalling and going back to WMP 10 has not helped anyone that has
tried.
The issue is with the embedded wmp on websites not the stand along player,
although some of us initially could also not hear mono sounds on the stand
alone player (direct link) and have been able fix the no mono sound by
tools
/ options / devices / speakers / properties and making sure our device is
selected. It is almost like the same default device selected is needed
for
embedded playing, but haven't found a place to do this. My sound card is
the
default sound device for windows.
Out of a dozen or so people that I've run across with the issue, 5 or 6
have
solved by installing 3rd party codec packs or one person "narrowed to AC3
codec and solved by reinstalling AC3Filter". No one has reported that the
Codec Pack approach has failed to solve the no mono sound issue (but who
knows what other issues might be created by the packs).
Some of us use Firefox and had the 3 missing files to play embedded issue
and it is possible that this "fix" might have caused the problem, but I
don't
think so, since the missing files problem seems to be limited to Windows
Media Center PCs.
I'm interested from 2 standpoints
(1) My own PC - although if it was just me I might install a codec pack
and
spend my time on something else
(2) From a webmaster standpoint, I'd like to know if there is a
significant
problem with website visitors hearing mono sound. So far the no mono
sound
problem is not that rare, but doesn't seem to be that wide spread either.
Although you are one of the few people that does not have the problem that
we've been able to get to help test (thank you). I can't ask friends to
test since at this point, I would not recommend "upgrading" to WMP 11 and
once the problem is created, it can't be reversed.
