I have been reading your posts with interest since I have experienced exactly
the same thing.
My research has told me that the problem is a missing codec. IBM's Motion
Jpeg to be precis, also known as MJPG. I have verified that this is the
problem by installing a commercially available MJPG codec from PCI. Windows
Media Player then happily plays the offending AVI files. However the
commercial product is a trial and as such includes an advertising line at the
top and bottom of the picture (which is fair enough for a trial version I
suppose). Since we have already paid (to MS) for this codec it is not
unreasonable to expect MS to advise how to replace it when it goes missing.
So far the only response is to instal DirectX 9 which is supposed to have the
codec as part of its suite. I have installed this program with absolutely no
success whatever.
If any MS guru can cast some light on this matter I (and a lot of others)
would be ever so grateful.
Regards
Pete

Only the recorded sound is audible. On the screen a sort of caleidoscoop is

The error message mentions a missing codec. Downloading C00D10D1 from the
web does not help.
The recorded video can be played with Quick Time. But playing the video
through ZoomBrowser automatically starts the Wi Media Player
According to checks on the Ixus 50 (likely to be the same format)
http://itdp.fh-biergarten.de/transcode-users/2006-04/msg00185.html
then it's using XVid codec inside the AVI container.
If you installed XVid decoder from http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml try
"Latest standalone decoder DirectShow filter (installer)" with the
filename XviD-Dec-1.0-Beta3.exe
I'd be prepared to bet it'll decode fine in WMP.
In general, camera manufacturers provide the required directshow
decoders in the software which comes with the camera. Somehow yours
may have become uninstalled.
