your account does not have the proper usage rights to access the files. If
you are familiar with windows security then try to reclaim the ownership
of
the files/directories and then apply the appropriate user rights.
Another simple solution is to turn off the User Account Control under
Control Panel-> User Accounts -> Your account name > Turn User Account
Control On or Off.
THis requires a restart of you vista
Hope this helps....

I am running a clean install of Vista (Home premium OEM) and am unable
to play any of my mp3's in windows media player 11 or windows media
center. Whenever I try to play an mp3 I get the following error
"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in
use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is
stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct." The files are
all stored in [username]\music, I dont think permissions are a problem
as winamp will play the same files fine. I have tried deleting and
recreating the library and it still doesnt work. I have also tried
riping a CD to mp3. WMP will create the mp3s fine, but when I try to
play them it gives me the same error. Any suggestions?
Thanks for all the replies so far. I have tried disabling UAC and
still get the same error. The thing that is really confusing me is
that winamp will play the exact same files without any problems. It
is not just mp3s that WMP wont play, it wont play WMAs or even WMV
(both give the same error). In fact the only thing I have been able
to play in WMP is an mpeg file it is in the same directory as the WMV
that wouldnt play.
It will rip MP3s and WMA's correctly but any time I try to play
something I get the same error.
I have just created a new account with administrator privileges.
Started WMP did the express configuration, inserted an audio cd ripped
the first track using the default options and I am still getting the
same error. Here is a complete list of what hasnt work so far:
playing an mp3 or wma from my any of my personal folders (music,
desktop etc)
using WMP to rip a CD to WMA and playing the WMAs
copying the mp3 and wma to a data cd and playing them
Tried copying the mp3 and wma to a USB disk formatted with FAT and
playing from there
Exiting all other running programs (antivirus, firewall, winamp etc).
Disabling UAC
Creating a new user account
I also cant play WMVs (same error)
The only thing I have been able to play in WMP is an mpeg file
everything else gives me exactly the same error.
The really frustrating thing is that winamp will play everything I
throw at it.
I have done a system restore back to the base vista install and I can
now play the mp3s in WMP correctly. Now I just need to find out what
caused the problem and prevent it from reoccuring. Fortunately the
original install was only a couple of days ago so all I had really
installed were a couple of windows updates and new drivers. If I do
find out what caused the problem, I will post again.
In the end it appears to be a problem with Jetico firewall, which is
yet to be resolved, see the thread here:
