Re: License Migration to Windows Media 11

*shrug* OK, that's exactly my point then. It's either license issuance or license storage, and anybody not making that clear split shouldn't be talking about the issue.

If it's license storage (which should be anything that would come by here), they would need to talk to actual product support because it's a pretty horrible idea to try to get product support for storage of commercial data objects in a public newsgroup. The best anybody here is likely to tell you to do is to reset the DRM data store. Since that's a destructive action, most everybody with experience will avoid dealing with DRM issues because - again - those are steps you should be dealing with product support on.

So, for $35.00 (soon to be $59.00) or more, you will be able to ask a product support person with a language barrier how to solve your DRM issue. Another strong reason to not use DRM. Microsoft wants, when it doesn't work, money to fix what you already paid for.

Regardless, I'm unaware of any organization doing any finger pointing. If you know of someone doing that, name names at specific companies and I'll talk with them or have them talk to their contacts at the appropriate company. Figuring out which side of the equation is problematic is not rocket science. Solving the issue well can be, and that's why DRM issues aren't good issues for newsgroups.

Seeing my post a little while ago where you told the user that her problem sounded like a Napster server problem, yet it was fixed by Windows Update (who knows which update - no sense asking her because she won't know), then I would like the contact information for your supervisor at Microsoft.

Educating people upwards isn't hard. If people want to make the world better, they need to point out the specifics, though. Not providing that data stops discussion dead.

Search the group for DRM or permissions. There have been numerous posts that
are still unresolved where people have upgraded to WMP 11 and not been able
to resolve the problems with their licensed media and are still unable, as
far as we know here, to listen to the DRM protected media they paid for.

I'm unaware of any incidents of this happening: either there would be a
problem in license issuance (server side, vendor looks at first) or license
storage (client side, Microsoft looks at)... what third case am I missing
where this would even be a question?

I'm sure there's the question of dealing with qualified personnel (always a
problem in such a rich and complex field), but it doesn't seem like figuring
out which way to point the finger here could possibly be rocket science.
