URGE endless install in Vista w/ media player, center (error 1324)

Other people seem to be seeing this as well, but I have not found an
answer. Urge is continuously crashing while trying to install/
configure itself. It gives an error saying that the Start Menu
contains invalid characters, quits, then restarts. It continues doing
this as long as media player or media center are open (in Vista
Ultimate). Running the installer from the command line and piping the
results to a log file shows the error (cut for brevity):

Urge cannot even be uninstalled, as it must use the setup process as
well. How can I wipe it from my system? Or at least get it to leave me
alone.

(ranting now...) I find it incredibly difficult to believe that a
program that is the centerpiece of windows online music marketplace
could be this horribly broken. Was it tested on ANY computer before it
was released? So far, I like vista, but it only feels 80-90% "there."
The reason that people PAY hundreds of dollars for Windows is that
they expect it to WORK w/o crap like this. If I wanted something that
works 85% of the time, I would install linux on every computer. Oh
well...
