Re: WMP 11 cannot play the file, (radio), great, but what codec? File?

I am trying to use WMP11 to play http://www.antfarm.co.za/clients/safm/safm_22.asx,
I know it works as it is used by a handful of us around the office.

The message I get is 'Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The
player might not support the file type or might not support the codec
that was used to compress the file'

When I use Media Player Classic, I do get the radio info, (Tite,
Author, Copyright and so on), but no sound is playing. My speakers
work fine :)

My computer is the same as everybody around the office, (we all have
the same make of computers as well a the same software's). So I am
guessing that something went wrong somewhere along the line.

I have no firewall, (apart from the windows default).
Windows SP2 with all the latest updates.
I have reinstalled WMP 11, (twice).

How can I get it to work? How do I know what codec it needs? I do I
know what codecs I have?

Simon

Nobody :(

How can I get WMP to tell me what it cannot play rather than a cryptic
message like 'Windows Media Player cannot play the file'. Why does it
not tell me what codec it wants?

Why is my list of codecs such a secret? Where can I find what is
loaded and what WMP needs?

Where can I find a player that can play MMS files?

mms is not a file type, it's a stream type, which is why I tried to
take you down the route of finding out what's up with the network
connection there (most likely suspect). The actual audio there is just
"standard" built-in windows media audio 9 at 20kbps. Nothing unusual.

One last shot then before I hold my hands up :

If you go to Start menu, choose Run then type in

cmd

In the command window which opens, run system file checker : type in

sfc /scannow

Press enter and let it run to completion. Next, try to register the
ASF handler (which is what WMA and WMV use for decoding) :

Type in

regsvr32 wmasf.dll

Press enter again. Cross your fingers - you should see a standard
popup of 'regsvr32 in wmasf.dll succeeded'. Try WMP again to see if
any change. It might work, of not I'm back to wondering about the
network ;-)
