Nobody's making you use Vista, with it's concommitant resource
requirements. I figure OSX is a better deal on any given hardware.

I'd also recommend having a look at Mandriva (formerly Mandrake) which
is a rather user-friendly Redhat build with a wide range of extras.

Anything labelled as a "Live CD" in general doesn't require
installing, so it's great for evaluation purposes.

Mandriva also offer a 2GB memory stick preinstalled to run from there
as "Mandriva Flash" - it's 80 EUR which is almost as much as a 2G USB
stick costs ;-)
