I'm the original message poster, but wasn't part of that bit about freeware.
I must be hallucinating because I simply do not see a MP3 converter on WMP
11. Where is it hiding? I go to the Rip menu to format and there is only
WAV, Windows Media Audio, WMA Pro and WMA Lossless (whatever the heck that
is). You're the second person who said the WMP 10 or 11 has an MP3 encoder,
so I'm beginning to think there is one. But where?!?

Is WMP 10 a Windows player that you purchase?
It's available for download for XP machines at no cost. It's not
available for pre-XP operating systems, and it's not available for
Vista (the default WMP11 which can't be rolled back or repaired)
You can get WMP10 from this download page :

I ask because the one that MS
provides for free rips CD's to WAV or Windows Media Audio. You have to
purchase an add-in to have MP3 conversion capabilities. When I looked on the
The add-in was for WMP9 and earlier, WMP10 shipped with a bulit in MP3
encoder partly because of the number of problems with standalone ones
(it was a frequent user request). MS bit the bullet and paid for the
license for that encoding on behalf of the users.
MS web site for converters, I didn't see one that was made by MS. I'm
concerned about the add-in I did purchase because I think I detect some
distortion at some frequencies of the MP3 audio files.
You would have to run it through a waveform analyser to be sure though
