Any one know of any other players that will give you the same features as WMP
(such as auto playlist, never listened to playlists, full library view), but
doesn't take control of your music and only makes changes when you tell it
to? If so let me know. I've used MusicMatch before but didn't care for it,
but maybe that was cause I was too cheap to buy the full version.
Unfortunately no one player can do everything and play all formats. I
have 5 players in order to play most types of sound and video files.
However I do not use the library features of any of them, since many
players will not play some formats, and the organization is different
in all of them. I thus store music and video in files that I create. A
typical stack of files might be Music>Classical>instrumental>Beethoven>
etc. This works for me. You can set WMP11 to search only certain files
to build a library, but apparently you can not shut off searches of My
Music. The solution is easy. You just do not store any music in My
Music and store it in your own custom file system such as I mentioned.
There could be a problem if you want to download pay selections, but I
never do this. The downloads I have found all are in degraded
compressed formats such as mp3, wmv, etc and not in uncompressed files
as recorded on a DVD. I am not going to pay an inflated price for
inferior recordings that may have copy restrictions, when it is quite
legal in the US to copy your own DVDs, tapes, LPs, etc for personal
backups. It is illegal to sell copies, or even give them to someone.
Most commercial DVDs are encrypted and here the laws are a bit more
murky and some issues remain to be resolved in court, and likely will
remain so for quite a while.
