Re: WMP 11 will not play any media at all

I ran dxdiag.exe twice. Both times I get the following:
Error: Problem getting Direct Show info, result code = 0x80040154 (class not
registered)
Does that help at all?

RealPlayer actually uses a different interface, so that's likely a huge red
herring.
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#dsound
may be helpful here.
ClassNotReg is reallllllly hard to work through since WMP uses a large
variety of objects.
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#classnotreg
was my old starting point on this. =\
Generally if I get a machine in this state, it takes me a couple hours to
track this down - as an end user, I would typically use regmon.exe compared
to a normal machine to track failure points.
This sucks. Knowing stuff like whether mplayer2.exe is working or not will
really help you define the problem area, though. =\

Speaking for myself only.
See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.

Hmm. So, there is absolutely no way to fix the problem, short of a total
reformat and re-load of all of my programs? Is there any way for me to
find
out what is not properly installed?

So, the real error you are running into is 0x80040154
(REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG -
"Class not registered"). It means that some component on your machine
isn't
properly installed. Unfortunately, it is not possible for me to tell what
that component is. Since you have already installed WMP on your machine,
the
only other thing I can suggest it going to Windows Update/Microsoft
Update
and installing any relevant updates available.

Yes. I went to Web Help, It told me to check the Sound Device. That
is
not
the problem, because the sound device plays just fine with Real Player.
The URL where you end up is:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/webhelp/default.aspx?&mpver=11.0.5721.5145&id=C00D11B1&contextid=71&originalid=80040154
But that does not help, as I said.
I just installed the latest update to WMP 11. No Joy. But, the same
thing
has been happening since version 8. I know that it's something loaded
that
interferes with WMP, but I have no idea where to look.
Any additional help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Did you try going to Web Help? If it does not help, can you post the

Windows Media Player Version 11 will not play any media on my
Windows
XP,
HE
(came on this Dell 8200) Version 5.1.2600. Every time I go to play
a
song,
I get the message:
Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file.
For additional assistance, click Web Help.
This has been happening all the way back to Ver. 8. Upgrading to a
new
version has made no difference on this computer. Windows Media
Player
will
not play.
When you click Web Help, you get:
You've encountered error message C00D11B1 while using Windows Media
Player.
The following information might help you troubleshoot the issue.
This tells you to troubleshoot your sound device. Well, my sound
device
works just fine, because I've got Real Player loaded, and it works
just
fine,
as does any other audio that I need to play, with the exception of
XM
Radio
over the Internet, which will not play either. Yet things with
sound
on
the
Internet normally play just fine.
I suspect that there is something loading that prevents WMP V.11
from
playing. I've gone so far as to uninstall Real Player, and see if
that
made
a difference, but it did not.
Can anyone help with this problem? Any suggestions would be very
much
appreciated.
Thanks,
