Are you playing DivX files? There was a couple versions of the DivX decoder
that did bad things with memory. If you update to a newer (or different)
decoder, it should work OK...

Hi Neil,
I checked again and believe the problem comes with the "avi" files.
I tried running the 3 commands you listed below but no change...
There's also a "data execution prevention" message whenever I
single/double
click the avi files--it says Windows has to close Windows Explorer in
order
to protect my computer; afterwards, another pop up came that says "Windows
Explorer has countered a problem and needs to close", which then closes
the
folder that contains that avi files
has my avi files been "corrupted" in some ways? Is there any way to fix
my
issue?
Look forward to your advice. Thanks.

The first question I'd have is "what sort of files are they ?" Example
answers might be "AVI file" or "MPEG video" - you can usually find out
the file type (if WMP is operating correctly) from the File ->
Peoperties menu, or just right-clicking on the media file in the
player library, choosing Properties and inspecting the file type.
There are a couple of steps which are worth checking, if you have 5 :
If you go to the Start menu, and choose Run. n the box type these
lines, then press <enter> key after each one : a small popup
confirmation will show after a short delay -
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 wmp.dll
regsvr32 wmpasf.dll
If you could try again and let us know if there's any change with MWP
after that, it'd be great to hear back !
Cheers - Neil

of a sudden, whenever I try to open a video file, a message pops up
saying "windows media player has encountered a problem and needs to

i tried opening music files MP3 and had no issue.
I believe it's not a codec problem...tried to install WMP 11 and the
same problem persists. I can't even see the "error code" to idetify the
error. What should I do?
Thanks for the help in advance.
