AND with the Zune Microsoft abandoned "Plays for sure" does that mean it
doesn't?

The interoperability of the iPod with other music playback and
transfer systems is non-existent though, so you're stuck with iTunes
like it or not.

PS. Apple's Fairplay is far more generous than WMA DRM.

License terms are set by individual content providers, not Apple or
MS, so go complain to them instead about their restrictive pigopolist
agenda.

I was referring to the users experience, in terms of being able to play on
an unlimited number of iPods, burn to CD, play on up to five computers,

Yeah OK - go speak to my housemate, who has to reformat his iPod
beacuse his laptop died and the pod is authorised only to that PC.

Now he's spending 6 hours re-ripping music because he can't get it
*off* the iPod and back into another version of iTunes on a
replacement PC. Swings and roundabouts, friend.

easily authorise/deauthorise computers, easily backup protected music, etc.
All of which has been PROVED to be a much more pleasant user experience than
Windows DRM.

So now, if you go to your XBox360, or Roku soundbridge, or (choose
other random non-apple branded kit) : How are you going to play those
protected files on them ?

Of course, you can't because Apple Will Not License Fairplay - Period.

I'm not sticking up for any DRM scheme here, it's common knowledge
that I consider them all an infringement of users fair use rights, and
in general the Spawn Of Satan (r).

But let's get it in perspective - no licensing to anybody, or licensed
but broken - the choice is yours (or not, of course, as a consumer)

It is also available for more computer operating systems than Windows DRM
(W2K, XP, presumably Vista, Mac OS X, and Linux via Codeweavers CrossOver),
although I will agree fewer devices than Windows DRM. So while Microsoft are
more open regarding device licensing, they are LESS open regarding operating
systems (they refused to let Flip4Mac provide DRM support for their Mac
WMV/WMA codecs).

Technically, the underlying OS would have to offer provision for
secure code hosting, which isn't the case in BSD.

As I understand it, the problem is Apple won't play ball regarding
addition of this sort of code/memory protection within OSX, and so I
don't believe this was a refusal but more of a standoff that if the OS
support for a secure digital path can't be achieved, then Flip4Mac are
in a holding pattern.

Definitely agree with you regarding the brain dead media companies. DRM is
pointless, the only people it inconveniences are customers LEGALLY buying
music and movies. Pirates are still finding ways to pirate.

Wow, we've met in the middle and agree on something, at least ;-)

By the way, you will note that with the Zune, Microsoft have adopted the
worst mix of all.

Fewer operating systems (than Apple Fairplay), and fewer devices (the Zune
and nothing else) and Microsoft are NOT licensing it to anyone else.

Do W2K and XP have protected path? I did not think so (although I have not
paid attention to this), if so the argument about not supporting Flip4Mac to
provide Windows DRM on the Mac seems specious.
