Re: Having to be online with windows media player 9?

It is my guess that this is part of the spyware functionality being added into all versions of Windows Media Player. As is the case with most spyware applications, the fierceness at which they attack their malicious goals often breaks other functionality on your computer. And they never do enough testing of the non-spyware functionality to fix it. After all, the non-spyware functions are only there to get you to open the program so that it can do its real insidious tasks of reporting everything in your media library to the mother ship - a task that requires, unfortunately for you, an Internet connection. And to think Microsoft calls me evil? Not hardly.

I am running windows 98SE. My windows media player 7.1 stopped working
it would just hang when I doubled clicked on a mpg file that had its
wmplayer icon. I up graded to windows media player 9.00.00.2980. I get
the same results when I try to use it. I discovered that if I am online
then I can get it to play files on my hard drive. I figured it needed
to download things from the web in order to play them. I did a restart
only to find that it again would not play the files. So I went online
and it again was able to play the files. I then check work off line
under the file menu and disconnected my dial up connection to the net.
I was able to continue to play the files one mpg and one mp3. However
when I did a restart of the system again and opened win media player
and clicked on the work off line and then went to open file it again
just said opening media with out anything ever playing.
What gives do I always have to be online in order to play files on my
computer? I looked at the options and saw nothing about saving
downloaded components needed to play files to my hard drive. I do have
a check mark at down load codecs automatically in the options under
player tab.
